i understand it, but still think that if you are in your own private car you should be allowed to smoke in it (with the window down)

I got tired of my mum smoking with me in the car when I was little so I just threw all her cigarettes out

Provided people were cool with not smoking when others asked them not to everything would be fine and dandy but minors especially would be intimidated by the thought of asking an adult to put one out

Not sure if it was a necessary law but I can see why it passed, in two minds

I can see what they're trying to achieve. But.
Seems fairly trivial,
Probably difficult to enforce.
How many police are going to bother pulling over drivers who are smoking simply to check the ages of any passengers?
Will flop, imo.

I think thats fine. In fact i'd be all for smoking in cars being illegal.

I mean takes up one hand, stinks and they aren't healthy. Driving a manual one should have use of two hands in case of accident/emergency.

Also, many of my friends smoke in their cars and while i ask them not to they don't stop. A window open does not help. People constantly bug me about smoking in my car. I always say no but no one respects that.

should have right to smoke in your own car and all, but you have to feel for little kids who inhale second hand smoke and can't really do anything about it

Smoking in confined spaces is horrible regardless of your age.

Umm its their car, its impolite but if you dont like it get a lift with someone else. As for in your car, tell them to fuck off if they cant wait 10 minutes.

Whatever, i dont really like smoking and it has negitive health effects, but if people want to smoke in their cars thats fine i dont really care. I can kind of understand the law because kids arent really having a choice here in inhaling toxic fumes, basically if the parents want to be bad parents then they used to be able to smoke all they wanted in the car, and the kids could end up with lung cancer or whatever later in life for the shit choices their parents made, but its like that with a lot of stuff.

Its not like the government is actually helping kids here, if the parents are allready smoking with kids in the car, the fines might protect the kids for the 1hr a day they are in the car, what about the other 23hrs the kids are at home with the parents smoking.

My mom smoked in the car with me once and only once. I never let her again, it was that bad. Don't know what it is (not just because it's a confined space), but it's like 100x worse when you're in a car.

Don't get why parents would smoke in the car with their kids.

It makes your kids sick AND the car upholstery reek.
This law is a win for resale value as well as child safety.

I couldn't agree more... if a driver had just about anything else in their hand while driving, they'd be in strife for not having both hands on the wheel. What's the difference between holding a mobile phone on loud speaker in one hand or holding a cigarette? (apart from the latter option being much more disgusting)

Like pretty much everyone else has said.

Yes, It's justified. But, can it be enforced?

While my memory is hazy from yr 9/10 commerce, I'm fairly certain that laws can't be passed unless they can be enforced. And, like others have said, I don't think police will bother to enforce this, much.

Your kids don't have the choice of avoiding it. I think this law is 100% a good idea.

Make them smoke free for the children's good.
If the children were offered a smoke-free ride in a pedophiles car one block away then the smoking parent should have appreciated this law's implementation.

Brilliant idea.

Dom is anti freedom as usual, but what about the freedom and rights of the children in the car? if you're that desperate for a fag, pull the car over and get out.

There is no excuse for smoking in a car with children.

Good thing but parents who are addicted to nicotine won't follow it and police officers probably won't pull anyone over to check ages.
