so im a lil' freaked out about the student political scene.
im starting uni at Macquarie in March and I'd consider myself a socialist ok, but im an old fasioned bloke, gun-owner, cricket-playing bogan from the west with liberal-supporting friends who doesnt want another person dead cause they like the free market instead of collective wealth.
From what ive heard the group i was interested in (socialist alternative) are a bunch of radical, wingeing, hipsters and the young libs are a bunch of spoilt rich kids.
if all these gross generalizations are true then what am i to do cause im not gonna through bricks at some cop cause he's a cop, nor stand in a uni courtyard bellowing at people (cause i love f**king with people like that :p)
if i can get some feedback about the student political scene and the groups invloved it would be well met.
Cheers

As for student politics, it's a general thing to see that groups like the socialist alternative are hated upon because they are considered to be annoying and what not. At UNSW, thankfully politics don't play a major role in university life because we're so much more interested in studying, achieving good grades, finding internships and job offers.

When you get to SRC elections (they generally happen during late semester 2), political stuff becomes intense because it is a whole big political scene; you have people from different parties shitting on each other and backstabbing.

youre a fucking idiot

manym ore people have died from trying to "collectivize wealth" than from "free market capitalism"

your ideology is inherently crazy so none of us have any time to hear you complain that it, surprise surprise, attracts crazy people

and I mean who really cares anyway, its student politics, not something that actually matters

which is true except

that is not what he was saying at all lol

he was saying he does not like people overreacting against people with different ideological beliefs, not that more people have died from free market capitalism than collective wealth

University politics is about as important as highschool politics, but the students just seem to think that it's super important. Just ignore it. Or sit on the sidelines and throw things.

In the ninth grade an activist substitute teacher decided to poll who in the class was pro gay marriage and I was the only one who didn't put my hand up.

The reason I bring this up is because the degenerate classroom and it's degenerate teacher didn't realise the irony of looking at me in total disgust.

Simple. You dont get involved in student politics. The socialist alternative are the worst thing about uni. Theyre so far left theyre off the spectrum

Macquarie has such an active SA group. They really are a nightmare.

They're the alternative to something, but it ain't sanity.

To be fair, some use it as a stepping stone into real politics to boost their credentials.

You'll find that in student politics, each group is fiercely what they are. The SA will be extreme, the greens extreme, the Liberals extreme...the people are just really, really passionate and many use it as a stepping stone for rising in parties. There's normally a decent sized group really, really passionate about politics on campus, even if the main percentage is completely apathetic.

Macq is not known as one of the most extreme campus, there will surely be some extremists, but I'm sure you could find a political niche you so desire whilst there.

That being said, the student elections are a load of rubbish.

Their track record is worse than real politicians.

University tends to bring out the radicalism in student politicians, so the leftists are more left and the right-wingers are more right than in the real world.

If you're indifferent to student politics, then try not to look them in the eye when they're campaigning and if you are interested but hate the crazies, just keep searching around until you find a group you identify with.
