Subject Selection for year 11 & 12 (1 Viewer)

Hey guys, I'm just your average year 10 student who'd like some information on my desired subjects (positive/negative experiences, workload, scaling and any sort of information).

Subjects

Advanced English (2 units)
Modern History (2 units) OR PDHPE (2 units) - Would appreciate some advice on which one is better
Business Studies (2 units)
Legal Studies (2 units)
General Mathematics (2 units)
SoR (2 units)
Polish (2 units)

As you can see, i'm currently not sure if i should pick Modern History or PDHPE. I have almost exactly the same passion for both subjects, and i'm capable of getting good marks for both. I suppose i'm better in PDHPE in year 10 (2nd in the grade), although i'm fully aware that PDHPE is almost completely different to the yr7-10 PDHPE.

Background Information

I'm classified as above average in the top class for English. I have a love/hate relationship with English, and sometimes find myself pondering on the fact that i'm actually in the top class.

With history, I'm very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject. I really enjoy history and assume i can get good marks. I'm also basically top 8 in the top class.

I like both business and legal studies, and am exceptionally good at both. I do commerce in my school and am approximately top 5 throughout 2 classes.

Now it comes to math. This is probably, or rather IS my weakest subject. It's kind of weird with math, I understand almost everything to do with math but find myself struggling in an exam. Basically, I forget info quickly with math.

Don't really need to explain Religion. I'm pretty good at Religion and don't really have any grudges against it.

Same goes with Polish.

Tbh for 2u maths you don't need much of yr10 to do well, you just need the bare basics ie trig algerbra etc but if you really want to go for Gen then that's also cool BTW if you're forgetting maths quickly, it means you haven't fully grasp the concept yet
If you reckon you can ace modern and pdhpe, I would go for modern because it scales higher than pdhpe. But do not pick subjects purely basing on scaling just saying.
For languages you need constant practise, so don't slack off (me)
Business studies, you can delete 90% of your commerce knowledge
Ranks can change drastically in yr11, so if you don't come in the top whatever don't freak out (not sure about other schools)

My view on PDHPE and Modern History - I did both during year 11 and dropped Modern during year 12. Although modern was a fantastic subject to learn, it was very content heavy and took the majority of the time. I made the logical decision of dropping it and focusing on my other units to do better and because my writing speed was slower and rank was low I thought it was a good idea. My advice - pick the subject you like most and choose that one.
With maths I chose General because the scaling between 2U and general is fairly minimal and I wanted to do better in General than die in 2U and get a crap mark. 2U takes more time but if you work hard its beneficial as it gives you greater options when choosing university courses. So looking at your grades, hit up 2U and see how it goes. If you're not happy with your performance, you can always drop down to general. The thing is that if you do general at the start you can't go up to 2U.

Something to think about though.

Probably obvious not to drop from Advanced English to Standard English. It personally sounds like to me that you're more passionate about Modern History than PDHPE, but the choice is yours in the end. All I'll say about Modern History since I've done it is that it's a lot of content and essay writing, so if you don't want that on top of your other subjects, think about whether you'll prefer something else.

Do General Mathematics if you're confident you'll be good at it, because you'll be looking at wanting to be about 85+ in marks. Below 80 will likely not do good for your ATAR. I haven't seen negatives for the other subjects.

For me, writing essays isn't so much of a struggle although it doesn't come naturally to me since my first language was polish. With general, i'm not confident of reaching 85 (more like 70-80, if i perhaps put in some effort), although I still feel the urge to do maths, as general maths can open up some options to me (I think).

What do you mean by open up some options for you?

Either way, General Mathematics with consistent effort can certainly be a subject you can improve upon. And if you don't mind writing essays, maybe Modern History is what's for you. Ultimately I really think you should be making decisions based on a combination of your passion and natural talent for the subjects.

For example i heard you can do accounting even with general maths (apologises if that fact is wrong), although i'm not stating that i want to pursue a career in accounting, just giving an example. It's very hard to pick either modern or pdhpe. I have same passion, same skill, although I kind of dislike/ would rather not be writing essays 24/7. This doesn't mean i hate writing essays, I just prefer not to write them. It's really just the knowledge i have of history that excels me to the top. Meanwhile with pdhpe, I don't really like science (heard that pdhpe involves science). This basically, for me, brings it to a 50/50.

On the top of my head, doing Commerce to do something Finance-related prefers you to have done Extension 1 maths (I don't remember, I'll check) and Actuarial Studies which is very Finance-y and full of statistics needs a base of Mathematics Extension 1 and preferably even Extension 2

With your example, they are maths reliant, and I know that the assumed knowledge, the lowest one I have seen is Mathematics

But they aren't interested in pursuing accounting anyways. But I barely hear people say they want General Maths kids, it would be extremely hard for them as they don't have the basic skills of just 2U itself, and not even close to the level of 3U.

But then again, we have people like Drifting who rapes that theory
