Hello everyone,
ill be part of 2014 hsc and i was wondering if you could give me your opinion on whether or not i should keep Music 1.
I do Adv Eng, 2 unit math, legal studies, business studies, biology and Music 1.
Out of all those subjects i do pretty good in all except 2 unit maths which im a bit above average in, and in terms of music 1 im medium level at piano and although i do enjoy the class i dont really enjoy the subject nor feel i can do well in it (also it scales bad right?).

So i was wondering should i drop Music 1??? Also, would these extra periods i would get help me in increasing my maths grade??? because that was one of my main reasons as to why id like to drop music- so i could put extra time in my maths.

Thankyou everybody. :)

I think you need to consider whether you want those 2 'spare' units from Music 1 as a bit of a safeguard. I actually started the HSC year doing 14 units (Maths Ex 2, Adv English, Phys, Chem, Eco, Geo) but dropped chem pretty much immediately in order to work on Maths - the free periods are great as long as you can motiviate yourself to work and not mess around. Having said that, I personally wouldn't drop down to 10 just because I don't trust myself to do well in everything.

If you're confident that by dropping Music you can do well in everything else, then definitely do it. The major work would be a lot of work too.

Re: "Can I get a decent ATAR with these subjects?"

hello biased buffalo,
thanks a lot for your reply :)

I agree with the idea of having a safeguard, however music 1 is barely a safeguard as I would have to do very well in it for it to count more than, for example, an average mark in biology. Basically music scales terribly, and I don't think I could do well enough in it anyways for it to count + there's the major work you mentioned.

I think I would be able to use those free periods efficiently and in some way I think it could be good to do 10 units as it will push me to work harder and not slack off in my remaining 5 subjects as I no longer have a safeguard to fall back on.

Thoughts???

Yeah, if you aren't confident you can do well in it then there isn't a reason to continue - unless you enjoy the subject. I dropped music in year 9 so not sure how the music I/II courses work.

I think you'd be fine with 10 units looking at your subjects. Feel free to PM me if you need help/advice.

I think you need to consider which units will count. At the moment, it doesn't sound like your maths will count. If you're planning on dropping Music for frees and work on Maths, it's probably a sign you need to revise your current study strategies for maths. I don't think extra free periods will help (I have a lot of free periods and I admit I don't use my time wisely during then and often focus on other things, as opposed to doing work haha, but you're probably different)

You need to be confident in your ability for 10 units, and it only sounds like you're confident in 8. Work hard for both subjects this term and see how you go. I would recommend sticking it out for at least until the second round of assessments.

I agree with rumbleroar-sometimes if you don't use your extra periods wisely, you can end up easily procrastinating and your plan can back-fired. You need to devote yourself to love your subjects-make a strong effort to-because in any subjects, you can do well if you put enough effort in-there are people who have done 'bad-scaling' subjects who have gotten very high ATARs, don't let bad-scaling make you put less effort in. Furthermore, you really need to revise your study methods for Maths-you need to ask questions if you don't understand-on BOS forums, to your teachers/tutor, you need to fully understand the mathematical concepts and you need to make time to do enough practice questions of VARYING difficult level and check your answers to make sure you improve. You can make time for maths even with 11 units if you are really determined in improving it-make a to-do list, establish short term and long term goals, and make sure you stick with your plan and evaluate your progress as frequently as possible to maximise your chance of achieving the best possible result.

Don't drop Music 1 yet-wait another term, change your attitude of it as a 'bad-scaling subject' which means you won't do well in it-transformation of your attitude is essential to making sure your subjects will count-and make more time within your current timetable for maths-maybe cut back on your social commitments or extra-curricular/work. Put 100% effort into everything you do in HSC to make sure you won't regret it at the end of the day:) Hope this helps and best wishes for this year:)

Honestly, think about whether you'll really use your free periods. I mean in year 11 I dropped pdh so I could spend more time for maths, but instead that period is just used to relax and de-stress. If you don't feel motivated or enjoy the subject, personally I would drop it. But also, try get advice from your parents, I mean they know what they're talking about.

You should drop Music, so you can use that extra time to lift up your marks for the other subjects. However, like everyone said above, don't sit back and relax just because you have less units: be productive with your time. Proper time management is sooooo important in the HSC.
