There are a certain species of "perfect" people out there. They are pretty much at the top for everything they do including academics, sports, socialising and even have good looks....grrr not fair!!!:angry:

I have someone like that at my school.

He is the most "perfect" human being that I have ever come across. He pwns me in all my subjects by like 10-20%, he is the one of the most popular guy, he is the atheletics champion of my school, and he is the nicest guy that I have EVER come across.

Well I know that I watch on average 3 eps of scrubs but i get about 4 hrs of work done on school days and 8 hrs on weekends and then theres tuition on top of that. I admit that I don't go out anywhere near as I did in yr 11 but I somewhat like it this way because theres something to look forward to after hsc. A lot of smarter kids then me at my school are looking at 99.7+, they like can't wait till its over but I can guarentee that when it is, they will be sorta lost and really bored at home.

That is true. Bill Gates, Kerry Packer. For argument's sake, Kyle Sandilands. However, that happens to like one in a million. On the other hand, those that get 99 UAI/ATAR, about 80% lead steady lives, wives, husbands, families, 9-5 job, decent pay, etc etc in an office with air conditioning (or at the very least, they are where they wanna be). The chances if you put in the hard work now, are much higher.

um okay wat? bill gates made it to harvard and got like an insane SAT score.

I got 81.40 for my UAI which I'm quite happy with, I definitely could've done a lot better if I focussed more on school than socialising at the end of Year 12 but it's set me up a lot better for working full-time this year, and interacting with people on a daily basis both in public and at my job.

lol r u just trying to make yourself feel better? theres like 600 students or something who get an ATAR above 99. how many of these ppl have u met? and wait til the end of hsc. its the nerds that party the most. trust me ive cn it.
and evryone who thinks intelligent ppl have no social lives....ur just basing that off the nerd stereotype in every teen movie.

I'm aiming for 98.5+ but don't know if i'll get it, hopefully a lot of work before the actual HSC helps boost my marks...

BUT my main point is I still party, drink, see friends regularly etc and thus far this year has been awesome

my friend however (as someone mentioned before with their friend) has been pressured into working(by his parents) 5:30-7:30,school then 4:30-11:30 everyday!!!
plus he gets private tutoring for every subject and although i don't do nearly as much work as him, i'm still almost neck and neck with him in terms of marks...
he just gets burned out with the magnitude of the work/pressure.
I see it as an example of how everyone needs a little down time

I know quite a few people who did exceptionally well in their HSC who didn't really have much of what i would call a social life, but it wasn't cuz they were too busy studying or anything, they just weren't interested in that kind of thing, liked spending their free time doing other things. On the other hand i know others who performed just as well who party pretty hard so i dunno, i don't think stereotypes really apply- people will do what they do regardless of how they perform academically.

I have friends that actually utilise study as a social skill... well this site sort of acts like that as well I guess. Studying is my main focus and comes before friends a lot of the time, but I keep a balance that I think is healthy.

But you need to "play around" and experience life and what it has to offer. Getting a ATAR of 99+ doesnt guarantee you success. Sure you're likely to do well but at what costs. Also many people drop out of school in year 10 and some have become the worlds most successfull businessman.

Maybe some of the people you are referring to actually enjoy studying and don't have a single life goal of making as much money as possible, although I might be being naive and optimistic, The more you enjoy what you do, the easier it will become. Often times the very very best enjoy learning so much they end up as professors.

Also calling high acheivers super smart isn't quite accurate. There is a strong correlation between academic acheivment and intelligence, but its not 100%, not by far. I know someone who had an iq that would have placed him in the top 1/1,000,000 (seriously) but he did no work at all his last 2 years, just played video games, and got a 96. I think he might have even got 29 for English, he just couldn't care less about playing the academic game anymore, even though he was winning university competitions and senior olympiads ect while 13 years old. And on the other hand, the ranks of the high acheivers are full of fairly intelligent people who just worked their pants off in year 12. Anyone with an iq above 120, or even less could get over 99 if they had enough motivation.

It's a little unfair having people around you that are just naturally talented in almost all aspects of life. There are a few at my school (except less on the academia)... They are very nice people too.

But I'll tell you what I think

I watch a lot of anime, and in most of them it appears to be that
Smart students = Popular students

I think this concept is slightly different in Australia.
But that's another discussion.

Anyways, my point being --
Being brainwashed by Japanese animations has caused me to believe that studying is cool. (Which is sorta my motive to begin with)
And of course, the competition in my school and striving to be on top ;]

Not everybody who gets 99+ has no social life. It's about studying smart, not hard. The people at my school last year who got 99+ worked like that, so they still did a lot. Our dux was actually vice captain.

ATAR means jackshit in the scheme of things.

I think that a great deal of the super diligent students are that way because of pressure from parents and community expectations, which is particularly true for certain cultures.

One of my physics students, who is definately capable of band 6 in physics, said to me that in his particular culture/community (he is indian) an ATAR of below 98 means you are shit basically.

He won't get an ATAR of 98. He is bright, committed, but he is more like a walking textbook and can't think outside of the box, but i suppose.. that isn't really required in the HSC.

I got a UAI in the mid-90's. I don't even remember what it was exactly. Even if you don't get the ATAR that you need to get into the course you want to get into, do some other course for a year, get at least a credit average and get an internal transfer, easy.

Potential employers dont care about ATAR as part of that is only a reflection of how well you can memorise what needs to be known, not how you can actually think about original ideas.

Soooo true. Whats the point of putting so much effort into a 99 when your future job interviewers/coworkers/friends are gonna think you're boring and a complete social wreck cause you never went out in what were meant to be the best years of your life.

Honestly, the people who are topping the sciences at my school have got to be the least intelligent people ive ever seen. No logic abilities, no communication skills. Only the discipline to regurgitate textbooks onto exam papers
