SUTTION AND BOVERI!!!!!!!
CAN ANYONE PLZZZ ACTUALLY OUTLINE THE ROLES OF SUTTON AND BOVERI IN IDNTIFYING THE IMPORTANCE OF CHROMOSOMES!??????????????????

THE EXCEL BIO BOOK HAS HEAPS OF information on this dot point and the hsc online website gives very less info..... and my tr gave some info which was not in either of the sources!!!

so plz help.... and do u guys think that it is important???

if it's a syllabus dot point, then it's important.

something that often arises while sourcing secondary sources for information is inconsistency of information. that's when you have to collate information yourself.

my notes say this:
"boveri's work with sea urchins showed that it was necessary for an organism to have a complete set of chromosomes in order for normal development to take place;

sutton's work with the chromosomes in the testis of grasshoppers showed him that chromosomes are chromosomes are distinct entities which occur has homologous pairs during meiosis, during which they separate so that each gamete receives one chromosome from each pair, noting that after fertilisation a full set of chromosomes were present.

both men observed that the number of hereditary characteristics greatly outnumber the number of chromosomes, concluding that chromosomes must carry large numbers of these characteristics."

Sutton worked on grashoppers as their chromosome were visible during cell division, he realised that not all chromosomes are similiar or homologus in structure.

Boveri worked on sea urchins and noticed that a full set of chromsomes were needed for proper development of and organism. Also he realised chromosomes were passed on from generation to generation in cell divsion and that genes are the units of inheritance and are located on chromosomes

TOGETHER they provided the first conclusive evidence that indeed genes are located on chromosomes.

Sutton worked with grasshoppers because of their chromosomes. He concluded that chromosomes were responsible for inheritance and that mendel's factors (genes) were located on chromosomes. He also concluded that different factors appear on different chromosomes.
Boveri worked with sea urchins and chomosomes in nucleus. He concluded that chromosomes were responsible for transferreing a trait from one generation to the other through cell division. He showed that a complete set of chromosomes are necessary for normal development.

They are both credited for their discobery in the role of chromosomes in 1902 and they provided the first conclusive evidence that chromosomes occur in distinct pairs and carry units of inheritance.

Sutton also showd that not all genes can be explained by mendels ratio, if the genes for two characteristics are on the same chromosome they will move together and be inherited together, these are known as "linked genes".

The Sutton-Boveri theory was developed in 1902 and these scientists were credited with the discovery of the role of chromosomes.[/FONT]

Theodor Boveri was a German scientist who worked on sea urchins, using two different species of sea urchin to determine that all chromosomes are different and that a complete set of chromosomes is required for normal development of an organism. Boveri also discovered that inheritance was caused by factors in the nucleus and not the cytoplasm. He also theorised that:
Each chromosome carries hereditary factors[/FONT]
hromosomes are transferred from one generation to the next in cell division[/FONT]
Chromosomes swap information during gamete formation
Chromosomes carry Mendel’s factors that “inheritance was caused by two factors inside the cell” - since there are more hereditary factors than chromosomes
Walter Sutton was an American microbiologist who observed changes in grasshoppers during meiosis. He did not carry out a distinct experiment himself but combined and observed the work of other scientists, including Mendel and Boveri, and theorised that:
Chromosomes are carriers of heredity units.[/FONT]
Chromosomes occur as homologous pairs.[/FONT]
From meiosis, each gamete only receives one chromosome of each pair.[/FONT]
Chromosomes provided the mechanism for Mendel’s theories of and recognised that genes were located on chromosomes.[/FONT]
