Federation Fellowships are something the Howard government created to try to lure ex-pats back to Australia. The deal is that they get double the standard Professorial salary for five years, AND a big pile of money to establish a research group and do research, AND they have no teaching duties except research supervision. After 5 years, they revert to ordinary Professor (E) positions, which means their salary halves and they have to do undergraduate teaching. The theory is that they will be established, and won't mind this and will stay. However, they are under no obligation to stay, and none has yet been here 5 years, so we'll soon see if this theory works in practice.
