I recently dropped to standard after averaging 65 in the prelim advanced course.

My question is, if I get 80+ in standard english, along with 80% in my other subjects (chem, phys, maths, design and tech) [and 40% in Maths Ext 1] is it possible for me to get 80ish ATAR.

Thank you :)

standard and advanced pretty much have the same scaling.
WRONG.

If Standard and Advanced have the same scaling, why don't we all do Standard?

Standard's scaled mean is 17.9 for 2008, Advanced's scaled mean is 31.3.

Standard and Advanced have the same ALIGNING. Their SCALING is very different as we see above. I would choose Advanced. I loved the Advanced course.

LOL thats the MEAN:uhoh: , obviously theres a larger proportion of better students in the Advance course...

English StandardHSC 43-----38.5---36.5
.......................scaled 38------28.9--23.5
English AdvancedHSC 42.5---39.5---37
........................scaled 37.8---31.8---25.5

They have similar scaling, this has been stated many times before...

Everyone quotes above hasn't read UAC's scaling report.
The difference is in their aligning =='

And why don't people do standard english? It's because the standard english aligning makes it much harder to get a good mark in it.

+1.

But the number of band 6's has been steadily increasing. Whether that reflects on the quality of the cohort or leniency of markers/aligning, I don't know.

I think that the poor scaling in standard English candidatures derives form the performance in the 1st paper because it is the common paper and thus the reason why the scaling of Standard English is so poor because of the quality of the 1st paper responses are of a better quality by a Advanced student say to opposed to a response by a Standard student.

but it is only a speculation

Another person who hasn't read the UAC report.

You are correct in saying standard is differentiated from advanced through paper 1, but the difference is in how the marks are aligned not how they are scaled.
