How important is structure when doing 7 mark question and such. Will they mark you down for poorly structured answers?

Yes. But what is more important is the content and that there are no contradictions. With a 7 mark question you should spend a least 10mins answering it. Write out a plan and list everything you know that is relevant to the question.

yeah, no contradictions, they can deduct marks if you have them. Basically follow the structure of the question, it doesn't have to have a coherent structure, just as long as its clear what you're saying and where it relates, thats all.

smallcattle: It has nothing to do with the ESL people. The whole problem with the new Chemistry syllabus is its increasing similarity to English. A well worded answer is required, but a well worded answer with irelevant information is useless. So in this case, content takes priority over structure.

If you included a description of each dot point, yes, but a dot point in itself does not help. For example:
Correct:
What aspects of the Haber Process are monitored? (4 Marks)
* Pressure - 4 moles of gas occupies more space than 2 moles of gas hence an increase in pressure will favour the production of Ammonia.
* Temperature - etc. etc.

WRONG:
What aspects of the Haber Process are monitored? (4 Marks)
* Pressure
* Temperature

Well, with comparing and contrasting certain things, you can draw in tables.

It also depends on the verb they stick at the front of the question, such as:
Analyse
Assess
Discuss
Explain, etc...

Answers do not have to be written in paragraphs.
Point form is acceptable.

However answer in the structure accoring to the key word.

Eg Compare
Do a table with similarities and differences

Explain or Describe
Use a clearly labelled diagram or equation if appropriate

Assess
Make sure you use a criteria.

There is more to what each means but they are not after English Essays

It is what the board has been pushing all year.

If you don't use a table make sure you have sections labelled similarities and differences or what is appropriate.

After the pages they were getting last year for answers they have clarified it and said an assess question etc must have the same main points between subjects but the method of answeribg should be different. There are no essay questions in the sciences.

yep. our teacher's been pushing it all year, for physics too. mostly for the neatness factor, and the advantage of being able to see what you've already said. also, i think you said earlier not to put dots if you do it in point form, but i really don't think there's a problem with that. it's all about whether you actually include all the required relevant information

Yeah, I now withdraw that comment in light of this new evidence
