tech: r u in med? cos lik its not the same ball game about memorising ure dot points in hope of passing anymore..
in the US recently there was a study on intern's consciencousness and lik a few of them fell asleep during thier shifts while working.. .. u could tell them tat u cna take anymore and hope to god that they dun think ure a quitter.. to be honest there is a real poor mentality in some hospitals..
sometimes med is lik an apprenticeship.. and u got to impress the resident.. cos its not wat u kno its who u kno.. sadly..

BMP = bonded medical place - the govt forces you to work for 6 years in an area of workforce shortage after you become a full doctor.absolution* said:

Theyre mostly not additional places. Much of these BMP/BMPS places have replaced normal standard HECS places. I dont think the govt offered anything remotely close to the claimed 234 extra places.

I decided very late that I wanted to do med, too late infact. Considering the effort I had already made for the HSC, i knew I wouldnt stand a chance.jang said:

yeah 50+ hours is very common. expect to do 80 hours in some weeks and have 15 hour shifts =/

Hmn, I don't agree with a lot of what's been posted.
I'm not sure about intern and beyond hours. But as for med and I know this is first year, I'm at college which makes life easier but for me I spend (on weekdays) 3-5 hrs a day in my room pretending to study (I'd guess 70% of this is procrastination) and on weekends maybe 6-8hrs (much of it procrastinating again).
I think that I waste a lot of time and I think I don't spend that much time studying.
I still get 7-8.5 hrs of sleep everynight (mostly 8hrs).
And I think I manage to keep on top of the work.
For this year I plan to use the time I allocate properly so I waste less of it and hopefully have some more free time.
But I still think I have A LOT of free time to socialise and go out etc (a lot of the times I take Friday off - pity it's usually dead in Adelaide) and if you look at it you can easily go to uni until 2-5, eat, study for 3-4 hrs and still go out to the pub, play a couple games of pool, or just sit around and chat. But remember college makes all this much much easier, you may have to sacrifice a little more if you have to travel and cook etc for yourself.
I think the main difference between med students and say arts students with less hours is that we have less time to sit around on the grass but really have just as much time to party really with a few sacrifices here and there. The key is to be organised.
But there's always going to be the people who HAVE to study every second of the day for whatever reasons (they're a little slow or just have a little compulsion to work) and if you're like this seek help (well if you have continual compulsions to study) and enjoy life. Med is great fun, lots of events, parties, drinking and studying of course.

and i had to work last year to make ends meet..
and that 15 hrs extra.. lolz..
plus u dun hav certain duties..
but yer somehow im short on sleep hours.. esp during the assignments..

I hope those aren't any of your cheap shots Alvin.
Yeah I guess we don't really have many responsibilties at college (and I tried to say that) - except 4x 4hrs kitchen duty a year which is really nothing.
But I still think if you study properly most people should still be able to have a lot of free time, maybe if it takes you longer to get stuff or if you have to study everything about a topic until you think you've got it (which isn't the point at Uni Adelaide) then maybe. But seriously I didn't mean any offence.
Different people are different, we all have different needs and circumstances but I'm just saying most people should be able to find enough time in the day to enjoy themselves that they're not looking like the stereotype always studying med student. If you have to work that makes life a little harder and I can't really comment here.
