It means two things... one is the struggle of ones self to become a better muslim or whatever and the other is to right a wrong doing or to defend yourself.

christopher mcveigh was not a muslim, yet he was also a terrorist.

saying that islam causes people to become terrorists is ridiculous. it's like saying that because someone works for the US postal service, they are going to go nuts and shoot people they work with.

i should preface this next statement by saying that i dont know a whole lot about islam, but i remember someone told me that the koran says that its a sin to commit suicide? is this true? and if this is true, doesnt that then make it almost impossible for terrorists to be acting in the name of their faith?

commiting suicide for nothing is forbidden..........however for example is someone is occupying ur land or something similar and ur only means of defence is using urself then its ok..........however this can only be done on your land.....not the occupiers.......u cant kill women or children........or innocent ppl......only those attacking u........it has alot of rules btw........and u have to get permission from a religious figure with high authority........most of these suicide bombers r not doing it right and killing innocent ppl is forbidden in islam...

AS always, Rules of engagement must strictly be followed,
if any civilians are killed, then they should be compensated for-and thats if it was by accident, and i mean collateral damage! its a crime to kill civilians purposely even during a conflict.
(the early muslims compensated the families of dead relatives killed in war- but it was very rare for civilians to be killed anyway)

now about suicide bombings?
put it this way: those teenagers who show off their WRXs put their life in danger, if they die, then they had brought death upon their own selves.
people who go to war with justification (ie self defense) put their lives in danger in an attempt to save their communities back home.

so what about suicide bombings? they put themselves in danger by surrounding themselves with explosives and then push a button! Not all suicide bombers died after the blast (ouch!) but they are trying to defend what they believe in, yes?

personally if i were in charge, i would use other methods of subversion :) but these people have decided on suicide vests and thats their decision. There was a conference on this a few years ago- i cant remeber the conclusion so ill forget that. the people in the middle east have seen the success of such attacks in two occasions: ( i mean 100% military targets)

198(4?) when hizbullah rammed a truck with explosives into a marine base (killed 243 marines)
and a few years back when the uss cole was bombed.

i cant remember suicide bombings being very popluar in the 1980s so ill take it that these attacks are a recent phenomenon.

Alot of those laws can be broken during a jihad.. tho some muslims disagree...

.

The whole point of jihad (as in a war time) is to uphold islamic law, teachings and values in a time where one's homeland is being threatened or when others around u are being opressed and need liberation. Without this jihad, islam will be supressed, because its a way of life for those who are free to practice it - not for those who are being oppressed (who cannot practice freely).

(Edit: i cant think of a time in islamic history where outsiders have plotted to crush not just the islamic empire, but the religon itself!)

"during a jihad" - that is the time where everyone is required to uphold islamic teachings to its highest degree. In order to bring justice, those who fight MUST be just, not enraged or willing to betray or mutilate because thats all wrong and sours the nature of the jihad. Its a struggle to live up to islamic ideals (striving against vice) whilst at the same time struggling against the enemy. In other words, a struggle against the forces of evil (or satan ) both within and within the enemy themselves.

I'd say Islam isn't causing terrorism, but it is acting as a masque for those who wish to commit terrorism.
now that can be true. i mean the way hostages are being taken in Iraq and executed has no basis in Islam. But in a middle -east survey which i saw on al-jazeera via SBS's dateline, only <30% of viewers supported such actions. So it can be said that these insurgents and others have gained rather limited support and sympathy from muslims in the middle east. They've gained such support on the basis that they are fighting - i dunno americans i guess.

these guys think they're fighting against corruption and occupation, but the truth is that its not up to them to form many small militant groups, they need a large group to do what Islam asks them to do. i would rather have saddam hussien in power than lots of these small groups trying to topple their corrupt government!

even in afghanistan- its ironic that the taliban actually brought peace to the country a few decades ago. Formerly hundreds of warlords had their own group and territory and fought each other.

so yeah, people are desperate to bring about a change around them, islam encourages this noble act, under specific conditions (like jou jou said: a religious figure of high authority [lots of followers] or even an islamic government.

i mean ask pvt jessica lych or even better Yvonne Ridley (captured by the taliban as a BBC reporter - Converted to islam last year :) ) they will tell u how well they were treated- the islamic way, these small bands of fighters arent reallydoing a good job of bringing peace and justice to the country and the (islamic ) world ought to know it  .

ohh, and i was just saying those things about muslim small bands of insurgents coz i was thinking about what Abdur-Rahman Wahid (fmr Indo pres) said about muslim conduct in recent times, which is to a degree truthful. Any small/minute occasion where human rights are violated by muslims sickens me, because islam expects the best from us.

its like....some....muslims think they can......denounce xmas and say its offenisve
i totally agree there, if they find christmas, the celebration of christ's birth offensive, they should go back to their non-christian home- seriously. they are ruining it for the rest of it, if i went to a musim country like say, Iran, and strutted about in their captial claiming their mosques(sp?) offended me and that i dont like the crappy music and singing i can hear in the city and sun down and how i think making women wear such restrictive clothing in such a hot country is a form of sexism then iam pretty sure i would ebe arrested, maybe even executed for what do they call it? heresy? blasphemy?

so what if they dont want to little baby jesus's inside shops, thats what christmas is about its a religous holiday

I am not trying to descriminate here but just maybe in our own country we should be allowed to celebrate our countries main religous holday and if it offends people of different cultures,

well too f***ing bad

In Australia we are primarily christians and no immigrant is going to oppress or descriminate against me by altering how i celebrate Christmas
