Hey guys,
I was just wondering what you all thought of history extension. I'm in Year 11 and considering doing it next year. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!!!:D

If you really enjoy history, you'll probably like extension. Do remember that you have to do a major project that involves a lot of research, time and motivation. Also, some people don't find the content very interesting- it's very focused on historiography rather than just learning topics like you do in modern & ancient. There are basically 3 components of extension history- historiography, a case study, and your major work. It does involve a lot of work, especially since it's only a 1-unit subject and it doesn't scale as well as say, ext. 1 & 2 maths and english. If you're considering dropping something in order to pick this up, I would suggest keeping both until you decide if you really want to do the extension unit.

Yep, I totally second that. The reason I chose it is because of my interest in the perspective History Extension takes, that of Historiography. If you get irritated by remembering specific dates and how to spell things like Homoioi and Perioeci and you want to focus on like the construction of history, then go for it. What I like about this course is that it's the only subject in which you can state your opinion and get marks for it - also the only subject you can get credited for saying "I think". Just be willing to put a lot of time into it, cause its full of reading and reading and reading.

I like the general historians we all do, but I am not liking my case study and I feel like i am swimming through mud for my MW.

There is no such thing as "modern extension" or "ancient extension", unless you are talking about the case study. Even so, most students do not get a choice in which case sudy they do. The Thuycidides case study would, of course, lean more toward Ancient and the Appeasement would be more "modern". But Extension History, in general, does not discriminate between the two "histories".

Our school's weird and decided to differentiate between ancient and modern extension. So yeh you're right, it's just meant to be extension history.

if you are unsure about what you are doing, take fruitbonbons advice, but in addition, i'd recommend that you think about something you would like to investigate. If you have to search alot for a historiographical thing you want to study, then you may not want to do this. Also, if possible, find out what case study you would do. If you are going to do something which will bore you to tears, then maybe not such a good idea? In addition, the book of Readings for History Extension is available for download from the Board under syllabuses... have a look at that before you make up your mind, but really, keep everything before you drop anything.

good luck!!

Yeh, you should definately have an item of research in mind before starting the course. As a whole, you'll love the course if you enjoy history. I certianly do, as our class has three students - one a 'left wing socialist sympathiser', another a 'right wing liberal conservative (me)' and the other a fence sitter. Our discussions are gold. Our teacher is basically the chairperson.

i totally agree with everything thats been said, and if i could have my time over again i wouldnt choose ext. history. i prolly would have rathered doing ext 2eng, but it all depends on what you're good at. Ext history takes up alot of time, and i found is a completely different way of looking at a subject. It's not really like any otherHSC subject, becuase youre looking at the study of history, not the historical event....
im not sure about scaling, some1 here said it doenst scale well, ive heard that, but ive also heard that its like the 2nd or 3rd highest scaled hummanities subject(if that makes sense)
but deff dont drop all ur available units before attempting this course for a while.

i knew id like history ext coz i did elective history in years 9 and 10, which looks at the same sorta stuff. I wouldnt pick it just coz u like history - quite a few people at my school did that and then dropped it when they realised that the course wasnt about mastering content like ancient and modern are. and consider carefully the fact that ur gonna have 2 do a major project which accounts for a pretty big part of ur school assessment mark (ours is 80%), so if u dont like essays or dont think ull have the motivation to do it, then id steer clear - also if ur doing sac, english ext 2 etc. and u have other major works 2 do, thatd be a consideration also.
its good but its hard work and it definately doesnt suit everyone.
if u choose to do it, the best thing to do probably would be to make sure that uve got enough units that u can drop it if u have to - theres nothin worse than being stuck in a subject that u hate going 2 and that will need u 2 put in a lot of work even if u hate it!

Correction: This is one of the highest scaling subjects, but because it is easier to do well in Ext. English or Maths, it may appear so. It must be remembered that the history project is not more important than the exam, as our teacher reminds us daily. If you bomb out in the exam, you're kinda screwed, simple as that. :uhhuh:

I have my Ext. History trial exam tomorrow, and I can't wait. It is good if you have a good teacher, and remember, the course is focused on historiography (the historians) rather than the event. It is a very interesting subject, and you must be truly motivated to keep up with your project. I can tell you that there was a group of us who did not sleep the night/day before the essay was due, as we still hadn't finished :uhoh:

We're still waiting for the results of that essay... lol

I love the subject, and recommend it. We've gone from a class of about 17 down to 14, because people freaked out about the project. I say do it, but only if you're prepared to put in the work. The project is a huge stress, but when it's out of the way, the sun comes out again :)

This is the truth, as plain and simple as that ;)

if you're in any way interested in history. keep you options open.

you can always drop it if you hate it, but you cant really pick it up again mid-course.

I do it via distance ed. It's ok. I have a pretty damn caring teacher that rings up every few days to help. Project is fun though. Prob. is with Distance ed I was the only one doing it so of course got 1st. Marks were good enough for it though. My HSC exam thus was worth 100 wooping percent!!! Brilliant exam though. Guys don't forget to mention that the exam questions are like always the same so there is that good pt! I loved H.E.
