also in reference to the teenage angst- the character is a10 year old
It's still angst though. Teen angst has been regarded as a broad term for a while now, encompassing the angst of pretty much anyone under 21 or so.

write in present tense
Depends on the story really. If its a straight narrative style story, present tense is the way to go.

whether its angst or not, the marker will think its angst unless you double up on pedal and get to the point to prove it isn't.
