Outline the arguments for ecologically sustainable development and discuss the likely impacts of an increase in the rate of Australia's economic growth on the enviornment.
The Plan
Introduction:
Body:
1) the arguments for ESD:
- explain what ESD is and why it is needed (topic sentence)
- ESD needed for future generations to be able to cosume at a similar level to the current generation (intra generational equity)
- ESD needed to maintan eco growth in economy (if environment not maintained/sustained then eco growth will actually fall)
- ESD needed to protect Australian biodiversity and the quality of the Aust. environment
- more eco growth means there is a higher use of resources and waste products (e.g. pollution). This puts more pressure on the Australian environment. Leads to degradation of the environment, lower biodiversity, lower intragenerational equity.
- environmentalist argue that eco growth must be lowered in order for the environment to recover and achieve ESD
- past eco growth has caused considerable damage to the environment
- economists argue that the damage to the environment is not an inevitable part of economic growth
- Rather it is the government's inability to deal with these issues that has led to environmental degradation.
- eco growth can still go on as long as governments gets over how costs should be distributed and how they have to act in the marketplace.
Conclusion:
