i like la dolce vita a lot too, but i haven't seen many fellini movies - he's prob done better

Seven Samurai
Princess Mononoke
Fallen Angels (I also liked 2046, but it doesn't quite make the cut)
Fellowship of the Ring
Chinatown
Last Samurai
Return of the Jedi
Big Fish
The Meaning of Life
2001 : A Space Odyssey

Honourable Mentions : Les Diaboliques, Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Romperstomper, The Name of the Rose and Kung Pow.

By the way art, did you get Fallen Angels and Aguirre: The Wrath Of God on DVD? If you did, where did you find them? I've been wanting to buy them both for a while.

Les Diaboliques

one of the scariest thrillers ever. amazing that a suspense film can be so effective without a music score at all. you seen clozout's the wages of fear? it's even better, imo.

There are some very nice lists here. :)

I mainly prefer more contemporary stuff (even those that are period films).

1. Lost in Translation (Coppola, 2003)
2. In the Mood for Love (Wong, 2000)
2. Donnie Darko (Kelly, 2001)
4. American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
5. Amelie (Jeunet, 2001)
6. Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994)
7. Magnolia (Anderson, 1999)
8. Spirited Away (Miyazaki, 2002)
9. Fight Club (Fincher, 1999)
10. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Ritchie, 1998)

The runners up are from the likes of Princess Mononoke, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Godfather, Talk to Her, Adaptation, The Third Man and (i'm not sure if this counts) the Band of Brothers mini-series.

Could you possibly pick 2 more different movies?? For starters - one is crap and the other is set in a prison. Go figure.

1. The Emperor and the Assassin
2. Lost in Translation
3. Talk to her / Hable con Ellas
4. Gone with the Wind
5. The Lion King
6. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
7. To Live
8. High Noon
9. Kieslowski's Blue White Red trilogy (don't make me pick!!)
10. Trainspotting
11. Fight Club (I'm generic, silly and easily amused, so shoot me - it's still a great film)

Sorry guys, it looked too painful to bring it down to 10.
