There are some very nice lists here. :)

I mainly prefer more contemporary stuff (even those that are period films).

1. Lost in Translation (Coppola, 2003)
2. In the Mood for Love (Kar-Wai, 2000)
2. Donnie Darko (Kelly, 2001)
4. American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
5. Amelie (Jeunet, 2001)
6. Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994)
7. Magnolia (Anderson, 1999)
8. Spirited Away (Miyazaki, 2002)
9. Fight Club (Fincher, 1999)
10. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Ritchie, 1998)

The runners up are from the likes of Princess Mononoke, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Godfather, Talk to Her, Adaptation, The Third Man and (i'm not sure if this counts) the Band of Brothers mini-series.

1. The Emperor and the Assassin
2. Lost in Translation
3. Talk to her / Hable con Ellas
4. Gone with the Wind
5. The Lion King
6. Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
7. To Live
8. High Noon
9. Kieslowski's Blue White Red trilogy (don't make me pick!!)
10. Trainspotting
11. Fight Club (I'm generic, silly and easily amused, so shoot me - it's still a great film)

Sorry guys, it looked too painful to bring it down to 10.
Couple of interesting choices. For starters it's nice that someone included a Zhang Yimou film at last.. and nicer that it's not Hero or House of Flying Daggers.

Hate to nitpick.. but Wong Kar Wai's last name is Wong :p us Chinese do it the other way round ;)

Also nice that someone's mentioned Three Colours.. although for me Red and White were far superior to Blue.

Hah, you anal bastard. :D

Just joking. I didn't know that's how the Chinese did it. Might just have to change it around. :)

I'm not so much a fan of Zhang Yimou as i am of Gong Li.

And I thought Blue was the best one..? They're all excellent, but Juliette Binoche is absolutely delicious. Maybe i've been influenced by the media too much, who knows?

i'll admit it isn't herzog's most accomplished film, but the idea is so inspired and the way it portrays all the extremes of human nature amongst dwarfs - of all types of people - makes it extra-unique. i love films that capture humanity reduced to a completely primitive state, and for all it's wierdness, this one actually seems believable once you forget the lack of background provided for the facility and the setting. the metaphoric images of the empty car driving endlessly in a circle, and the final shot of the dwarf laughing mindlessly at the horse taking a crap, suggests that the dwarfs are doomed to exist acting upon their most basic instincts without any civility or sense of direction. to me, this idea, along with the absurd sense of humour makes the film really funny and scary at once.

even so, it's 'freakshow' factor alone makes it worthy of placement in my top 10.

I believe it's the version with Michelle Reis on the cover. Man she was fine in that flick. Not that I've seen her elsewhere.

I'm quite sure you're talking about the Region 1 edition, that has the big "Presented by Quentin Tarantino" banner on it.

Here is the Australian version. I'm keen to get it, but i'm nervous spending $35 on a film i've never seen. Might go down to the videostore tomorrow and see if they have it though. Link - http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/228273

Are you homophobic if you're put off by the idea of seeing a graphic gay sex scene?

I hope not! I'm keen on Happy Together for Wong and Leung, but the apparent "intense gayness" turns me off.

I hired out Fallen Angels today, can't wait to watch.
