Pedro Aldomovar made a great deal of movies in the 80s I think.
That's true, he had that Pepi, Lucy, Bom film, which was sort of famous.

But his first huge hit was All about my Mother, and that was released in 1999. Therefore I feel like he belongs in the list.

Bryan Singer has made crap since The Usual Suspects, Darabont has made crap since The Shawshank Redemption (Not a big fan of The Green Mile, or X-men movies).. but I guess Shawshank by itself warrants him a place. Peter Weir will be removed.

and i really don't think 'sir' ridley scott can be counted. what with alien being 1979 and bladerunner 1982. if you've been around long enough to be knighted you can't be considered recent

For some reason I keep forgetting Scott made Alien, no excuse though I guess considering that I did In The Wild for English.

Richard Kelly: ONLY film: Donnie Darko
Joss Whedon: ONLY film: Serenity

And Tim Burton should probably be taken off too - wasn't Beetlejuice in the 80s? And Batman?

re: joss whedon. the thread is favourite directors. not directors of film. serenity may be his only film, but i think the body was actually better

and i agree with tim burton, but could be considered borderline

Crap i have Payne on my own list but not on the big list. Thanks Asqy.

I'd say Tim Burton has made his reputation on movies made in the 90s. Beetlejuice and Batman were 88 and 89, which is close enough to the 90s.

Richard Kelly has only made Donnie Darko, but I added him because I thought he might be quite well recognised for it. I guess not.

actually, you did say 'first major movie' so i think Frank Darabont's first major movie is the shawshank redemption, since his 2 movies prior to it, i have never heard of..

and as for Bryan Singer, same thing, the 2 movies he made before TUS, i've never heard of.. so i'm guessing TUS is his first major movie ?

No, I'm ruling out Bryan Singer purely because he hasn't really done enough to qualify considering all the other directors that have done more. I guess I should really get rid of Richard Kelly to be consistent though.

What are you talking about?
The Usual Suspects is one the best movies ever..
if that isn't "enough to qualify" then what is ?

A few rules.

1. No Dead Guys. No Kubrick, No Hitchcock, No Kurosawa, No Renoir, etc.
2. The list should be composed of directors whose first major films released in the 90s or later, so nobody who was making movies in the 70s or 80s either. So, no Lynch, no Gilliam, no scorcese, no Spielberg.
3. Despite rule number 2, you may include directors who released a few minor films or shorts in the 80s, but whose main body of work is in the 90s, such as Peter Jackson or Joel Coen.

Here's a list to jog your memory

Joel Coen- Fargo, Miller's Crossing, Oh Brother Where Art Thou
Wes Anderson- Rushmore, The Royal Tenanbaums
Jean-Pierre Jeunet- Amelie, The City of Lost Children, Delicatessen
Richard Linklater- Before Sunrise, Before Sunset
Darren Aranofsky- Pi, Requiem For A Dream
Fernando Meirelles- City of God
P.T. Anderson- Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia
Spike Jonze- Being John Malkovich, Adaptation
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu- Amores Perros, 21 Grams
Yimou Zhang- Hero, Raise the Read Latern, To Live, The Road Home
Ang Lee- Eat, Drink, Man, Woman; Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Ice Storm
Quentin Tarantino- Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs
Wong Kar Wai- In the Mood For Love, Chungking Express
Tim Burton- Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish
Alejandro Amenabar- The Sea Inside, Open Your Eyes
Baz Luhrmann- Moulin Rouge, Strictly Ballroom
Peter Jackson- Lord of the Rings, Heavenly Creatures
Sofia Coppola- The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation
Steven Soderbergh- Traffic, Sex, Lies and Videotape
David Fincher- Se7en, Fight Club
Todd Solondz- Happiness
Christopher Nolan- Momento
Lars Von Trier- Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves
Cameron Crowe- Say Anything, Almost Famous
Takeshi Kitano- Hana-bi, Zatoichi
Richard Kelly- Donnie Darko
Todd Haynes- Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine
Michael Moore- Bowling for Columbine, Roger and Me
Sam Mendes- American Beauty, The Road To Perdition
Guy Richie- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch
Pedro Almodóvar- All About My Mother, Talk To Her, Bad Education
Alexander Payne- Sideways, Election, About Schmidt
Frank Darabont- The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile
... Did I miss anyone?

My top 5.

Wong Kar Wai
Joel Coen
Quentin Tarantino (I'm over him, but he's still the most influential director in the past 15 years)
Alexander Payne
Cameron Crowe- Yeah.. he's not as good as the others as a director, but I love his movies usually.
OMG - TOD SOLONDZ - STORYTELLING

this is about your favourite directors. not best or greatest. favourite. you should be able to pick anyone who's done even the smallest amount

My absolute FAVOURITE director is, without a doubt, Lars Von Trier!!! I cannot even express how wonderful I think he is!!

The other great directors from your list are:

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu
Sofia Coppola
Spike Jonze
Sam Mendes
Wes Anderson
Baz Luhrmann
Tim Burton
Michael Moore - although I can't really consider him in the same category as the others, as he is a documentary maker so his style is different.
