i didn't see suburban mayhem, but i imagined it'd be a pseudo-transgressive load of bollocks.
ech :(
i can't read. looks like i'm destined to miss it too

suburban mayhem went for that horribly familar ground of suburbia bashing and had the gall to do it even worse than usual. after an hour of predictable shite it concluded with an ambiguous ending landing uncomfortably between lame black humour and sincerity.

two other films i remembered from 2006:
deDalma's The Black Dahlia was incredibly disappointing. he can do no good anymore. the casting was irksome; aaron eckhart and josh hartnett didn't share a testicle between them and hilary swank's bone structure is a little too coarse to be a convincing femme fatale. aside from like two cool action sequences the plot trailed confusingly to nowhere and the conclusion/denouement was just plain silly.

little miss sunshine was kinda derivative but not overly offensive. meh.

Good year, let's hope Inland Empire gets a local release soon.
Is that likely to happen? I read somewhere that Lynch is releasing it himself because no studio wants to touch it. Does he have the means to get it here?

this thread is a lot shorter than last year. where did benny and alleycat go??

haven't seen it yet despite my love for bdp (can do no good anymore? femme fatale was a masterpiece!), have a feeling i'll feel the same way. will surely make it a dvd rental tho.

also, i'm adding the descent, shortbus and the prestige to my honorables.

I am more into television than movies so I haven't seen that many movies this year. I can't remember all the movies I have seen or exactly which year they were released but I will give it my best go:

Good:

Brick
Accepted
Cars
Cry_Wolf
Grandma's Boy
Hustle & Flow
Jackass Number Two
Lord of War
Talladega Nights
Thank You For Smoking
The Matador

Alright:

A History of Violence
Inside Man
Just Friends
The Wrong Man
Mini's First Time
My Super Ex-Girlfriend
Running Scared
She's the Man
The Da Vinci Code
The Moguls
Tristan + Isolde
V for Vendetta

Bad:

Failure to Launch
Firewall
Kisses and Caroms
RV
The Benchwarmers
The Break-Up
The Descent

Wow, thirty movies. I didn't realise I had seen that many:santa:.

Hmm let's go through my ticket stubs for the year.

I'd buy the DVD-
Casino Royale
The Departed
V for Vendetta
Walk the Line (maybe)
Xmen- the last stand

So bad they're good-
Snakes on a Plane
Borat

I'd watch it on Foxtel but I wouldn't buy the dvd-
Fun with Dick and Jane
Superman returns
Pirates of the Carribean- Dead Man's Chest

Things I can't remember-
Memoirs of a Geisha (saw it in America in January)
Casanova (made my bf go on Valentines day. He drags me to all his gun movies)
Good Night, and Good Luck

shithouse: hard candy, book of revelation, color me kubrick, hostel
A could've sworn a few of those runners up made your runners up list for 2005 icecream. With that, as well as the fact that some of the movies on my list mightn't be out in Australia yet in mind:

Mine:

1. Conversations With Other Women
2. Cache
3. Shortbus
4. The Queen
5. Volver
6. A Prairie Home Companion
7. Half Nelson
8. Stranger Thank Fiction
9. Last King of Scotland
10. Thank You For Smoking

Oh yeah, where did you see Mutual Appreciation, icecream? That was one torrent I couldn't find :p

Edit: er.. just read the 'aussie theatrical release dates bit'.. I'll stick with what I have, or else my list might be a bit short

i haven't seen femme fatale but mission to mars was mind-blowingly awful.

i really enjoyed watching the queen - like everyone said, helen mirren was terrific.
babel, on the other hand, was kind of annoying. it wore its ideas on its sleeve and came out fairly overwrought and patchy.

this guy described babel best:

A steaming shitbomb of a movie, the cinematic equivalent of “We Are the World,” starring Brad Pitt as Kenny Rogers, the obvious moral of which is that stupid people live all over the world — not just in America.
i liked it a bit more, only because of the japanese section, which cast a nicely melancholic spell over me and had an excellent performance by rinko kikuchi, who i'm glad is getting oscar buzz. otherwise, i'm sick of innaritu's shtick.

i liked the queen a lot too, and was surprised at how entertained i was. mirren was fantastic but i though michael sheen was just as impressive.

yes the japan sequence was by far the most interesting
that structure is so fucking annoying because you're getting into a sequence and ZIP back to fuckface brad yelling while kate bleeds to death. lordy that grew tiresome.
it's annoying how affective poor chieko's story is and only to later realise that its loose relation to the other stories is entirely meaningless.

though to call it a 'steaming shitbomb' is a little harsh :p

Arabs are people too, it would seem, though they are mostly toothless and incestuous, usually spending their elderly years doing bong-rips in dimly lit hovels; and the Japanese - don't get me started! Actually, the last of these episodes is more or less ok, coming across as the greatest after-school special on horny deaf teenagers ever made.
LOL
