Don't you think so? I mean, imagine if NOBODY went to them, then everyone would study for the HSC the normal old fashion way and tertiary instutions would have a realistic indication of who is bright. UAI just is a comparison yes? 5 years ago the UAIs were much lower, why? there are too many "smart" people competing for less and less places. What we are also getting are loads of rich kids going to these tutoring colleges, getting the "edge" off other students, artificially inflating their UAI to increasingly high levels causing stress and pressure on current and upcomming students to do the same. This is the undeniable reason people rich/not rich kids go to these colleges, but honestly its become RIDICULOUS to the point where it is SICKENING. Have you noticed more and more of these colleges are popping up? yeahhhh groups of friends cashing in on and perpetuating whats become a fucking nightmare of what should be a simple process. I feel sorry for the ordinary lad or lass who just wants get into Uni without having to pay/cant afford to pay thousands of dollars worth of tutoring to beat everyone else who's getting tutoring to get in. Hell, you might as well pay full fees and have your required UAI reduced!! its just going to get worse and worse... bring back the good old days :'(

Disclaimer: i know NOT EVERYONE feels the pressure to go to these colleges and ARE doing it themselves and kudos to you :)

Tutoring colleges are good if the tutor knows what he is teaching, and students care enough about their education to ask for assistance.
Half the people who went to my former tutor did not do the weekly set homework, failed the fortnightly quizes. You can kinda guess how they performed in the exams, if they actually showed up.
hehe i'm just curious... why did u put QUIZES in bold?

Of course tutoring colleges are evil. They play on the minds of young people (and their parents alike) that the be-all end-all is the UAI. Manipulating people into a false sense of security, they produce a bunch rote-learners. That's it.

Rope learner? Don't you mean a rote learner?

And believe it or not, that's what you need to do if you want to succeed in some HSC courses, especially science ones.

it is realli suck when some one mite not b able to pay for the tutoring and cannot receive the high standard of education thus. it is also pissing that the textbooks r so expensive

but then again, the world has always been unfair. and i think that is the way that it will stay for a long while. =\

it is like arguing btween communism and captialism. =]

i couldnt agree more, tutoring colleges are evil. as dapto said, the hsc should return to the way it was in the good old days where people werent 'spoon fed' education. some people spend hours upon hours at these agencies every week, i guess it wont change. but the sickening thing is that these colleges are recruiting from such an early age- year one, kindergarten?!?! that is sad...

if the quality of education a school provide was sufficient then the people that go tutor wouldn't need to go.

From the popularity of tutoring colleges, it's clear parents have no faith in public schools' ability to teach decently, or provide assistance to improve students' performance.
I have a choice of going, and I choose to go, simply to get that little bit of education beforehand so when I learn it at school it is more reinforcing my knowledge that I already have

But there's no point in parents forcing a child to go if they don't like it or don't want to go, because it'll simply be a waste of money

did u go to one kommy? if u did, u would have noticed the majority being PRIVATE school kids followed by SELECTIVE school kids. Sending your child to public means amoung other things that u have SOME faith in the system and your child.

true. your reasons for going a reasonable :) , i understand that has become the popular norm in preparation for the HSC. It's just sad that the days where learning was at school, and reinforcement was at home (via students active engagement and actual thinking!!) is slipping away towards a trend of passive learning and regurgitation. Passive learning and regurgitation I don’t really have a problem with lol, it’s the fact that people these days need to be spending thousands of dollars at private businesses copying down “perfectly sculptured answers” when they could have just read a textbook ya know? Hmmmm okay math is different… I guess im thinking more the sciences economics and english…
Oh well , whatever, thank you for listening to my rant :p

Most of my friends from school go to tutoring- but then, my tuition centre (Northshore)... everyone was from a non-selective school 'cept me and this other guy.

The HSC is evil :p
Tutoring is useful only for students who intend to rock up and work instead of socialise (im screwed there) and me tutor is filled up ppl from selective schools in the higher classes and the non selective in the lower ones hahahah

Ah, I think you're a bit of an idiot.

The more you work, the higher your UAI will be. Simple. If you want to go to extra lengths to ensure the work you're doing is done properly, and you want some extra motivation, go to a tutoring college. If you feel you can handle it yourself, good on you. Either way, no one gives a shit when the UAI comes out whether or not you've been through a tutoring college.

The HSC is a game. You play it for a year and get out. If you want to throw yourself into Law or Medicine at university, you need a high UAI. Tutoring colleges are there to ensure these people get them. They realise the UAI is not an indicator of intelligence, nor has it ever been, and are simply ensuring that their students are propelled into the career path they want.

Pull your head, out of your arse. To a lot of people the UAI is extremely important. These places provide security to those who aim high, for whatever reason.
