Has anyone been through the UBS investment bank challenge? If so, what was the experience like?

I know a few friends who did it and it was pretty hectic/full on, but ultimately worth it since they ended up scoring internships.

Which year of their course did they apply? I'm not sure if 1st year is too ambitious.

My mate did it as a first year and I think his team won or something... not too sure on specifics. Just remember everyone talking about it back in 06 when he did it. You're right though, usually it's 2nd/3rd years.

its too hard for a first year since they dont have a good grasp of corporate finance since they havent taken the courses yet

its a great learning experience but its definately time consuming if you want to win it
usually its won by com/law or honours teams

Can I still participate after I finish the commerce part of my degree? I'm doing Com/Law.

yeah thats probably the best time since you would have completed all the finance courses and maybe have done business associations 1/2 which gives you some perspective on structuring

So I would have to learn corporate finance? i.e. How to value a company; discounted cash flows, M&As and what-not.

man i remember how fking exciting it was (seriously), doing an alnighter in the uni computer labs, pretending to be bankers,etc haha good times

well just to be clear
i didnt do the UBS one but i was a judge at unsw in my final year

i did the JP one (not sure if they still have it, but basically the same thing) twice with the same team in my 3rd and 4th years

Helped a couple of kids with it last year.

Only really worthwhile if you know what you're doing or have help.

Otherwise you'll produce a pile of garbage.
