Hey, i've finally installed 9.04 ubuntu onto my computer on a different partition.

All is good going, except for the fact that my screen resolution is limited to 640x480. I've tried everything that's been suggested on the internet.

Note; my native resolution on XP is 1680x1050.
Video card is nVidia 8500GT.

I've installed ENVYNG to install the latest drivers to no avail. I tried installing it via System --> hardware drivers but that was unsuccessful as well.

Anybody have any idea on what's wrong?

The issue here is proprietary drivers.

Go to Administration > Restricted Drivers Manager

Check enable on "NVIDIA graphics acceleration"

Three ways to get the drivers working. I suggest you Install EnvyNG.

I don't see that option when i look for it. =/
Not to mention, under preferences i don't have the option for Screen and Display (or whatever it was). I checked underneath the directory where it's stored as well and couldn't find it.

It must be using standard VGA drivers.

Okay solved the problem. It didn't detect my monitor through the DVI port. So I connected the normal cable and it detected my monitor and voila. 1680x1050. I didn't do anything wrong!

Cheers for your help once again.

Ignore this person. 9.04 is far and away the best Linux distro yet. It has a bunch of speed, performance, and drivers improvements which I think you'd miss if you went back to 8.10.

Good to see you fixed the problem, though it's odd since Ubuntu has had DVI support for years.
