Yes, I'm currently doing Med at UNSW. I got 221 as my UMAT score, but my Section 2 score was 45.

Ethics is boring; but it's a must. It's mostly just common sense anyway, though some of it was maybe meta-interesting.

Anyway, UMelb may currently have the best alumni, but we'll see how they fare in the future when it actually concerns us. The universities which invest into their programs will shine.

I should think that UNSW's alumni and alumnae succeed in life, whereas UMelb/Monash don't succeed that much. This is my opinion.

As long as one gets into one of the Group of Eight Australian Unis that offer Med, one is fine.

THES, and melb has a very good reputation in the UK (where my extended family live and work). Not sure about the US though. They recently had 1 or 2 rhodes scholars. The THES rankings are good as international students go by them, hence smarter internationals, hence bringing up the rep overseas also.

UNSW does a 6 year course without giving you a bachelor of med sci. At least melb uni is 6 yrs plus this bachelor of med sci.
However, i doubt that a bachelor of med sci will help you in any real way.
So from a prestige point of view, Umelb and UNSW dominate, but they are kind of a waste of time , if you value your life, then youve got monash and Uncle and UWS 5 yrs.

Just a few questions, if you wanted to be a surgeon which uni would be most ideal?
If you would like to be a GP which uni would be ideal?
If you would like to be a consultant specialist which uni would u go?

I find it interesting that you say 'if you value your life' and 'waste of time'. Have you considered that university could be quite enjoyable? From my perspective I have the following:

- Access to a large library of books and academic journals (I enjoy reading).
- A music society with lots of bands I can play in (big bands are not easy to come by).
- Social events, people to meet, concerts...
- Academics who are willing to discuss interesting ideas.
- etc...

So far I've found the university life to be really enjoyable. Sure, there is a fair bit of work to do, but that's not going to change when I enter the professional world. If you are really desperate to get that porsche and house-with-a-view a year or two sooner than go ahead, push through medschool as fast as you can. However, I think you should pause before calling an extra year or two at university a waste of time - you can learn and do an enourmous amount of things in that space of time, and you'e got a lifetime to be a doctor, so why rush? Of course, I don't mean to say that longer courses are better. I just think that the idea that a longer course is a 'waste of time' is quite silly.

yes UNi is awesome but if u move to somewhere new( different state ) it's just hard to adjust at the beginning , new job, new place , new car( which i love ) ,

see the thing is ... is 1 yr of medical research worth sacrificing 6 months extra (up to 1 extra yr) of practical experience?

just so u can look lik a tosser?... with your extra degrees?... but then when it comes to the crunch u didnt practice enough gelcos or IV lines.. again this is the students' job... medicine is student directed .. and if ure an intern (which is the primary aim of a MBBS).. are u going to be just competent? or good?... u need to think about this for the sake of patients..

The point is, you don't always need some highly credible source to tell you confirm every little thing for you. Use a bit of judgment and common sense.

does community service, volunteering and work experience at a hospital help u out in getting into med in any way-because someone in my class as saying that working at the hospital could be a good point to use when you ar getting interviewed. Any ideas?

only umelb is going that way atm. I think they're keeping their undergrad med degree beyond 09 tho.

kido, volunteering, anywhere, shows that you have some community "spirit". In a hospital, I guess would highlight your desire. added benefit of showing you have a balanced life... or something. I did jack all in year 12 except study, due to circumstance, and i got in; but im sure its an advantage.
