the question of the day:

you are a med student at monash faced with three options-

1)go thru course graduate and get a fellowship
2)extend uni for a year and do law (MB/BS/LLB w00t!)
3)" " " " " " " " " " "medical science?

hmm what would you do?

Isn't it 2 extra years for you to do LLB?

Seems a bum the med degree is so long, makes BAHons, BSciHons, PhD and all sorts of things so unviable unless you want to spend 10 years in uni =/

PhD is not necessarily 2 years you know
especially for science related disciplines. Some may take up to 8years
Average is 3-5years full time

Lexi:
What I meant was:

Bsci(Hons) + MBBS + PhD = 10 years
or
BA(Hons) + MBBS + PhD = 10 years

= A lot of time in university.

=/

NB: Ignore idleness present in above post.

Yes of course I know that. I deal with PhD students every day (literally). My point is that's the minimum time required - the same way your minimum time for a BSc would be three years. You may take up to five years to complete it, but that's not what matters is it?

Also, PhDs are generally only funded for two years. After that you have to fund them yourself.

That's weird.
On the USYD and UNSW websites they both say it's 3-4 years. hmm.

Which field are you looking at?

Because right now I have a feeling I might've somehow confused PhD and Masters by accident. :p

PhD Medical Research after MBBS :p

http://notes.med.unsw.edu.au/home/medweb.nsf/website/2.3.PhDs?OpenDocument
"The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is recognition of successful research experience. This degree requires an original and significant contribution to knowledge in an approved area. The degree requires a minimum of 3 years full-time study and preparation of a thesis. "

I think you've got Masters by Research :p

USYD's is also 3 years unless you combine with MBBS in which case it is 2 + med electives + holiday work.
:)

Last post for this page.

I think you're right. I don't know how I made such a slip. Never mind, though, since I doubt many of us here will even get to Masters. It's all well and good for year 12s to talk about how determined they are to get PhDs and all that, but once you step through the doors it's a different story.

Year 12s, trust me - you're MUCH wiser to focus on your Bachelor's first. :uhhuh:
