Did you just say 2nd year Biochemistry is hard to pass? :-0
I'm doing dam advance Biochemistry as it was suggested in the course manual for medical science, uh oh.

It honestly depends Tim. First you'll need to tell me what major you're heading towards.

If you're thinking of Microbiology/Immunology/Viruses/Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Biotechnology majors then yes you will need to do Biochemistry.

If you're Anatomy/pathology/pharmacology majors (i.e. Medical Faculty) then you won't even touch Biochemistry.

I tell alot of students this, but don't choose Biochemistry unless if your major requires it. Medical Science's UNSW Handbook site doesn't explain what you really need. The best is to use Science (3970) and click on the majors you want, and find the courses via there.

But anyway, do tell me your major or area of specialisation, then I'll help you out further.

At the moment my mind is really fixed on pharmacology/phsyiology, having not done the actual fundamental courses though there is a chance my mind may be swayed.
The other major I would be leaning towards is pathology...

This is a direct copy/paste from my course manual:

Stage 2
The 48 UOC of courses taken in this Stage must include at least 36 UOC from the following 6 UOC courses, all of which must be completed by the end of Stage 3. When making choices for Stage 2, students need to take account of prerequisite requirements for courses in Stage 3, in particular with respect to their intended area of specialisation.
ANAT2241 Histology: Basic and Systemati (6 UOC)
BIOC2101 Principles of Biochem (Adv) (6 UOC)
BIOC2201 Principles of Mol. Biol (Adv) (6 UOC)
MICR2011 Microbiology 1 (6 UOC)
PATH2201 Processes in Disease (6 UOC)
PHPH2011 Introductory Pharmacology and (6 UOC)
PHPH2101 Physiology 1A (6 UOC)
PHPH2201 Physiology 1B (6 UOC)

I was never to keen on doing either histology or biochemistry and so back around december I had a real look through the hand book at other courses I could do instead. I wasn't able to find much that interested me though, so I spoke to a few people from both the science and medicine faculties and they pretty much insisted that I just followed the course program and didn't sway from it.

Also where it says- "All of which must be completed by the end of stage 3" Does this mean all of these listed subjects or all 36 UoC from these subjects if I choose to do subjects outside this list?

Ok this only applies to Med Sci students. Yes you must take 36 UOC out of that list you just pasted there and complete them by Year 3.

However, all of those courses below except for

PHPH2011 Introductory Pharmacology and (6 UOC) can be taken in your second year. I.e. For you Tim, that's this year.

That's good! As for your majors, I'd recommend you do the following courses this year:

Semester 1 08:
ANAT2241, PHPH2101 Physiology 1A (6 UOC)

Semester 2 08:
PHPH2201 Physiology 1B (6 UOC) & PATH2201.

Be mindful that PATH2201's Pre-Reqs are: PATH2201 Pre Reqs:
ANAT2241 OR ANAT1510 + Any one of the following: ANAT2111, PHPH2101, BIOC2101/BIOC2181

From this, you've already done 6 x 5 = 30 UOC for your Medical Science. So then you can just choose 6 UOC i.e. Microbiology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology.

I'm thinking that you're veering towards Faculty of Medicine Majors rather than BABS School.

Its hard to make the decision for you. My friend is a total Anatomy nerd and gets almost 96 for every one of these Anat or PHPH subjects. But just could not do well in Microbiology. I think its just the thing that Anatomy subjects don't really focus too much on chemical stains, or microscopes or cultures.

If you're still not sure, I'd pop around the science student centre. My decisions were based upon what I wanted to do in 3rd year, then it was the simple matter of finding the prereqs.

Thanks heaps for the advice Rekkusu.

Almost certainly then my subjects for this year will look something like...

Semester 1:
ANAT2241
PHPH2201
MICR2011

Semester 2:
PHPH2201
PATH2201
PHPH2011

Which is basically what you suggested. I'd still need to do a 4th subjects each semester, what would you suggest? I could do molecular biology in semester 2, or does that rank similarily to biochemistry?

I would recommend "Cell Biology" in second session, which is a new course offered by BABS in 2008.

Hey Survivor ;) How's the Phd going now? Oo I think I saw your name in the Peer Mentor list!!

When you refer to cell Biology, do you mean ANAT3231? If so, Tim would need to pass ANAT2241. From what I've heard that area of research is blooming. Hm...but you did say BABS school...

Anyway, Tim that's right! I think those subjects look great.

You'll just need to choose your electives for S1 & S2. Molecular is comparably much easier than Biochemistry, at least the exam questions aren't as vague as Biochemistry.

Also I saw your previous question bout adv biochem or fundmts. If you aren't focussing on a Microbiology/Immunology OR Molecular/Biochemistry major or minor, then choose Fundmts.

The only difference is the Practical Exam and how its going to be done.

However both me or Survivor can't go into full details, because this year as you know UNSW has changed into 12 week semesters, so it's purely up to the lecturers on whether they want to change the assessments/lectures/tutorials/labs settings or just keep it as it is.

Yeah, PhD is going great - I'm 1 month into it now. I am still waiting for them to pay me for my scholarship.

I am doing Peer Mentoring on Tuesdays. What day are you on? I am also teaching Med, and MICR2011 on Friday. Soemone asked me to tutor Microbial Genetics but I didn't want to. :p

As of next semester, BABS is offering a new course called "Cell Biology", different to ANAT3231. This, in a way, "replaces" Fundamentals of Micro and Immuno, even though the new course emphasises both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell biology.

Wow are you guys peer mentors too? Didn't think some of you guys would be on here. Just wondering, have you received the email regarding our mentee's and partner's details yet? Oh btw I'm mentoring on Wednesdays ^^

Oh and with regards to the thread, I'm a 2nd year MedSci.

Hey Survivor

I'm mentoring Mondays. Weirdly though only 2 could make it on Monday. While 4 either can't make it on 11am-12pm or haven't even replied to my emails. Any problems at your end Survivor?

I might change my mentoring day to Tuesday or Friday.

Nuuuuu omg man please change to tutoring Microbial Genetics!! Lol I'm doing that this session... :(:( *Cries*

Wow...So this Cell Biology should be like 80% microbiology based? If so I might take it, Micro has got to be the best!

@Ichi: Yes Michelle has emailed us our Peer Mentees and their contact details as well as partner. Gosh if only I partnered with you or Survivor, my partner ain't too responsive...><

@Tim: All Sciences students Mentor Med Sci/Adv Sci and Sci students.

You're having more luck then me. So far none of my mentee's have replied yet but I've worked out a suitable time with my partner. I would really love to start this week but I doubt it's gonna happen at this rate =/ Oh btw, where are you gonna hold the mentoring sessions. I know there's a place booked for this week but after that we haven't really deceided on an appropiate location. Right now we're thinking about just grabbing any unused CATS room.

Bored because you're not challenged? or bored because you're not enjoying what you're learning?
First year is pretty dull, you'll do anatomy for medical science in second semester which atleast brightens things up a bit but besides that you just have to grit your teeth and get through it.
Doing this course to try and squeeze your way into med is a bad idea, I wouldn't advice it to anyone, you'd be better off accepting an offer at the university of adelaide or similar then to do med sci as a way to get into med.

Hey can I ask, what are the histology (anat2241) theory exams mainly based around? It gets kind of confusing how in the lectures he always seems to go, now I've included blablabla in the notes I've given you but don't worry I'm not going to bother examining that. I'm guessing its going to be stuff like- How would you distinguish between and neutrophil and a eosinophil?

What about a delicate dichotomy of both? The material is duller than the bunsen burners in the first year labs.

Or, alternative reason-- because the first year is a load of cock and bull? Next year onwards looks downright fascinating though. It's. The. First. Year. That. Completely. Effing. Bites.

And as for those who actually think the grad entry scheme is an option...

Ahahhaaha. Ok, back to SCIF. First years have mid-session tomorrow morning. lulz.

SCIF is a complete load of Sh*#
However Babs1201 isn't that bad, I enjoyed most segments in that course, biochem and molecular biology were pretty good. But I guess the labs drag this course down to the level of ZZZZzz....

I'd just be enjoying whilst you can the relatively light work load. 2nd year is more interesting but it's a constant battle to keep your head above water.

Microbiology mid semester tommorow, wish me luck!
