kinda... although studies do show that a large percentage (i can't remember what the exact figure is) of people who have a uni degree don't actually end up working in that field... eg. my dad had an engineering degree and he ended up being a manager for Bank of America... other people in the bank had degrees ranging from science to arts etc...

I have heard about this too. When you apply for a job the company just wants to make sure you have a degree, it doesn't matter so much what degree you have. This is because University really just teaches you how to research topics, analyse them and understand them and then be able to talk and write about the topic later and that is what the company requires you to do:).

Yes, but this is even more true for school. It is not the knowledge you "gain" in school that matters (eg Maths) but the social and academic skills you learn. Similarly, university courses demand certain skills in academic practice, research procedure and presentation of information. In any profession these are important skills to have, making university a vital component of one's learning background when applying for anything more difficult than flipping burgers.

I'm doing a double degree of Science and Law and my UAI was in the low 90's. It's all about the University you go to.

That is what i don't get. How much worse can a university get in terms of the identical degrees. Is it like a selective school to public school comparison. Or is essentially, the same stuff is learnt, except you get more recognised because the university you graduated is famous (like Harvard and all the crap you hear how their graduates must be smart)

i think its more like a selective/public school realtionships... the comb law program in diff uni's are mostly identical... its the quality of the candidature that separates them... usyd obviously has a higher candidature than unsw... n unsw higher than uts... n so on... so logically the higher institution would produce the better graduates... however that said... that is only int theory... cos uni education is very diff to high school education... n alot of the higher achievers in hsc are route learners... that is... they only learn well when told exactly wot direction to go... and also... alot of the higher achievers ride on the back of their 4u maths/phys/chem which aint gona help unless ur doing science/law... n only have a mediocre eng mark (well not low... but not high either)... so how well anybody does in uni depends on him/herself and nothing else... cos if ur cut out for law... ur cut out for law... however... just like higher school the overall generalisation that the institutions with the higher cutoff "generally" produce better graduates cos they have proven themselves to be capable...

this is wholly unbiased...

Well more people live in Sydney, so there is a greater demand for positions at University and hence higher UAI cut-offs at Sydney Universities. Also, even people who don't live in Sydney will be attracted to Sydney Universities because they think they have better job prospects if they graduate from a Sydney University for some reason:).

P.S. I want to go to HARVARD University:D!

Harvard Law School does have a great reputation:). I just want to live in America, that is why I want to go to Harvard University. Any American University would be great to attend (especially on the West Coast of America: ULCA!). I might try to apply for a student visa or something so I can study there for a semester or two while at University:D.

How do you get the scholarship? Also, do you think that if I am studying in America, I have a better chance of being granted American Citizenship:)?

fulbright scholarship is for postgrad students to ivy league schools, of which harvard is a member... its judged i think on grounds of academic excellence, sporting achievement, leadership quality, and community service... lol... its alot... but ppl do make it...

of cos... however u bcome an american citizen u cant just simply b a student... u gota finish ur masters or phd then find an employer who will vouch for you... in which case for receive a work visa... then in time... u'll get ur green card...

Why do you want to become an American citizenship? Australia better in terms of lower crimes rates, population density and better weather conditions (no natural disasters)

Well I have wanted to live in Los Angeles all my life. Something just draws me there. I want to see California, it just seems like a great lace to live. It is the capital of entertainment which I am really interested in too (I want to be an actor):).
