i dont get it? i knew adsl2 increases speeds significantly, but how does that increase the range an isp will offer adsl? and if shes too far away for adsl, its unlikely she will be close enuf for adsl2

is there a thing where u can find out the radial distance from your nearest exchange?
That would be irrelevant. The relevant distance is the distance the cables take from your exchange. This is almost never the direct straight line length, in many cases its much much more.

Not irrelevant. It'll give you a rough idea of the minimum distance between you and the exchange.

horray i got my dsl2+.
8 days from applying for it... (last monday)

Test run on 30/5/2006 @ 3:27 P.M.

Mirror: TPG
Test type: ADSL

Your connection speed:

kbps: 8080.5
KB/s: 1010.0625
Mbps: 7.89111328125
Not much faster than my cable :( but it's hell cheaper :D

EDIT:
yeh when i checked my phone number on their website it says that i can't get ADSL but i can get ADSL2+. weird
and i'm with tpg the 6gigs a month plan for $40. compare that to bigpond $60 for their so called "unlimited" cable.

Bigpond caps you to 64/128 while TPG caps you to 128/128.
Bigpond counts uploads while TPG don't

ReADSL2
ADSL2+
ADSL2
ADSL
Telstra

CDMA
Digital
GSM
Optus

Automatic
5 speed Manual
Toyota

See what i did there?

That's an ADSL1 speed. I assume you were migrated to ADSL2+ but didn't change the modem to a ADSL2+ capable one? If so, you'll be able to sync much higher. And most Cable users get on average a downlink speed of about 4-5Mbit, so you're still better off.
no i've migrated from bigpond's cable to this tpg's adsl2+
i got the modem from TPG and it says "adsl2+ broadband modem router"

The bandwidth test varies a lot over time, highest i got was 11 thousand something while the lowest was 3k. It's very inconsistent but i guess it's cool when looking at the fact that we're using the ancient copper telephone wires.

oh yeh and also i survived for more than 8 days without the internet :p just waiting.

For some reason when i did ADSL Test, the result were lower than when i did with Cable Test. In either case.. im quite happy XD

My modem/router/gateway is Netcomm NB5.
Originally developed for normal ADSL, they've since meddled with just the software to get it to run as ADSL2+. I think this is very dodgy.

yeh too bad i didn't shift thru whirlpool's threads about the nb5 and how so many users have problems with it.

I guess it's just cheap, $90 but sucks. The longest it went without hanging or crashing was less than 12 hours.

Usually while happily browsing the web, a page would take >60 seconds to load and it would say there's no internet connection, LAN/Ethernet would still say it's connected.

Then try to "remotely" restart the router through the web interface, you can't do it because the router wont respond (nothing would be displayed). Try using telnet, same thing.

So you have to resort taking the 10 metre walk to unplug and replug the power adapter to your router. In a minute, suddenly you have super fast internet again yay! ... not.

But "just in case" it's not the modem's fault, i should try to "borrow" rather than buy another router. Does anyone kno any place to borrow an ADSL2+ router :)

That NB5 is so bad - get a Billion and you'll see a huge sync increase.
edit: Which billion modem do u say is good? I've looked around and they're quite expensive, >$100.
except for Billion BIPAC-5102S ADSL2+ Modem/Router - $85
note: " For those living closer than 2Km from the Central Office (Exchange), we recommend the Billion 7402 series models."

Hmm today I bought from MSY Ultimo a D-Link DSL 502T for $64 (and a 1GB USB drive for $35).

During setup I've noticed that the web interface of this router is much much much more responsive than the Netcomm NB5. Previously it takes about 30 seconds to load a page after clicking a link, now it takes 1 sec.

The synchronisation of the new modem is lower at about 21000 rather than 23000. I guess it doesn't matter much since not many servers would upload at that high bandwidth anyways. I'm hoping it's a much more stable modem (eg. Doesn't hang/crash)!

If connection still stuffs up.. then i could return it to MSY lol. but a 15% restock charge. so i'd get back $54.40
