And yes you have to sign those value statements if you were to have a visa granted. Just because we are tolerant for other people's political or religious rights doesn't mean we allow those same people to abuse our system to attempt to install their system of governance. Why does it matter? It's not used in an objective sense by most people so everyone's going to have their own take on it. It is almost always to do with australian values, but what are perceived as australian values varies.
