Wut?

Probably ~90s.
trust me. you dont need that high to get a 95 in MX2. most of people, who did MX2 last year in my school, got band 6 and their raw marks werent that high. maybe i over-exaggerated - 80s max.

A friend of mine who used to mark 4U years ago told me that say 39% raw got scaled to > 90. (The scaling was obscene and unfair; say a 56 raw could end up being 95 say, whereas a raw of 85 may end up 98.5 - so the mediocre ones got the most generous boost whereas the really good ones did not receive a proportionate benefit as max mark is capped at 100. Imagine your raw was 98 - what would you expect your final to be? 100 at most.) So he was often unimpressed by swell-headed 90+ 4U students in his Sydney U maths courses who thought they were macho in maths. So those boasting 95 for Maths Ext 2 are not necessarily all that great.

Dunno if this gives any insight but in 2009 I got 35/50 (for MX1 though) and my raw was probably around 45% lol

How many years ago did your friend mark papers? The epic scaling could be because the exams were a lot harder back then, and the syllabus has been dumbed down since 1980s. Nowadays any good 4 unit students should be able to get at least the majority of questions 1-6, while getting some of questions 7 and 8 as well.

You raised a good point. He was marking maybe 15 to 20 years ago. I found it hard to believe and kept querrying him as to whether or not he was exagerating. Even if it was for 60% raw to scale to, say, 92. What do you say - is that a big boost? Yea - I noticed qustions set 20 yrs ago seem harder. Have we become dumber? Haha.

But don't worry. I know you are a (very) good maths student.

All subjects have been dumbed down. Well, that's what my older teachers say. Well, my maths ones say maths and mx1 arent very different. havent asked about Mx2

Yeah seriously, the syllabus continues to be dumbed down years on so since this was 15-20 years, holds little relevance for a paper this day. But yes, I do understand the obscene scaling involved with MX2.
