Opera House and around circular quay/the rocks is nice. Newtown is also nice but I think different people have their own spots that are special to them...

Went to Newtown for the first time to have lunch just the other day. Very nice. I wanna go there during the night to check out the clubs.. I've heard it's good.

also, in reply to your question...there is a cafe in Annandale called the Side on Cafe...they have live jazz there most nights, very easy to get to and if you pick the right night, very romantic. There is a website with the gig list.
