What's the appeal of Law? (1 Viewer)

Title.

I for some reason am unable to see any kind of appeal, anyone care to englitehn me why you're doing it?

Just my curiosity is all

There is no appeal to it anymore really. Unis such as UWS ( U WENT SUPERB!!!!!) take the prestige and luxury out of the course when they pretty much accept anyone or anything. It is supposed to really be an elite degree only the top students dream of doing. It is wayyyyyy to competitive now. If I could go back, I wouldn't have chosen my commerce law degree at mac and would of rather studied engineering at UTS. My brother finished Mechanical Engineering at UTS and in his 2nd year of graduation, and is already the production manager of ActronAir (huge air con company).

But like I said, too many dick, tom and harrys study law now that it has completely taken out the appeal. I would say it would be now the most competitive degree at uni meaning sooo many students once they graduate apply for soo little jobs. I wish I could go back 2 years and have done engineering.

Yeah my hypothesis is a follows -

They watch the dramas and like it and more or less want to be able to 'think up random shit' that will help in court.

Along with the whole 'defender of the innocent' but I figured wouldn't Law m,ake you have to defend whoever is appointed to you at the firm? Regardless of innocence or guilt?

There'd be alot of moral dilemmas :|

The appeal for me is that I like to argue! I like to know my rights and I like being able to defend myself not just by screaming pointless statements but being able to back up my argument. I also enjoy reading and I pay careful attention to what I am reading.
However I am not interested in doing criminal law etc, I don't want to become one of the court- lawyers. I would prefer working for a big company just checking their legal paperwork.

You fail. If the only reason you did law is because of some sort of perceived prestige, you are truly a sad person. There are many, many good reasons to choose legal education.

That is such a wanky attitude and exactly why people hate lawyers and law students because they think we all have that attitude.

Doing law for prestige only is obviously going to result in you hating it. Doing law has many other postitives like
1. helping people
2. good money
3. people will always need lawyers
4. interesting (to some of us at least)
5. useful
6. can lead to many careers other than law
...
sure prestige is nice but you need other reasons to do it.

Also your statement makes no sense, you say everyone can get in so its no longer that exclusive yet you also say its way too competative...

Don't bag out UWS for offering law at a lower cut off, it allows an in for those who want to do law yet are kept out because pretentious students take a spot and inflate the cutoff.

if u compare a graduated student straight out of law school who gets hired by a mid tier-top firm, they start at a minimum of 40 000 i believe and if u compare that with other degrees eg teaching and business they just dont compare

correct me if i am wrong please but i dare say the minimum amount that a law graduate would earn in the workplace (including all types of firms eg top firms to boutique) would be at least over 30 000-35 000 a year would it not?- and this being the basic of the basic wage which isnt to bad when u consider it is around 600-700 dollars a week

yes doing law comes with a certain degree of prestige and 'lifestyle' as some have said. But the lifestyle that the bulk of people are exposed come from legal television shows. I have a friend who worked really hard to obtain a law degree and now works as an assistant to a court judge (something to that effect). She works long, long, long hours; and as a specialist in family law, has to face myriad moral dilemmas everyday and sees a lot of things that attest to the kind of dump our society can be. I hardly think a person should do law just for this so-called 'lifestyle'- there's more to it than money, suits and air-conditioned offices.

Look up grad incomes. There are many professions with better remuneration, not to mention less stressful lifestyles and less stringent entry requirements. Many people might take law for the Learjets, hookers and blow, but they're mistaken.

If you have seriously entered a law degree merely as a means to a material end, I pity you. The next five years of your life will bore you to death. And your career, for that matter.

My degree is awesome, I absolutely love it. I hope to make good money with it, but that is not my primary motivation. Law is of interest to me, and useful in fields I hope to work in later on.

I started because I thought it would be a good career choice, I stay because I find it very interesting.
Also, doing legal volunteering has made me interested in the helping-people side, too.



I think if you do it for the prestige/money, and always keep this as your motivation, it'll inevitably come across in conversation and make you look like a wanker.

Definitely. Also if you have no real interest in the subject matter, I'm not sure how you can ever hope to be motivated enough to get good results and make all that money....
