English (Standard) and English (Advanced) are scaled in the same way. I won't explain how they are scaled as the explanation is likely to over the page. They are scaled in the same way as both courses have a common paper called AoS that consists of 40% of the entire course.

I guess what you typed in SAM is probably around 90. 90 in English (Standard) is scaled to higher mark than 90 in English (Advanced). However, you should know that getting 90 (Band 6) in English (Standard) is extremely difficult & rare (only 21 people in the state got Band 6 last year out of something like 30000 people).

The main difference between these two courses is the content (I am referring to different Modules). In English (Standard), you will be studying different materials that are of less difficulty than English (Advanced) materials.

By the way, performing speech in English is not avoidable. There will be some point in your English course where you will need to do some tasks relating to speech because it is part of the syllabus that you get tested on speaking & listening. I cannnot definitely say whether English (Standard) has less speech tasks or not but doing speech is important and it is something that will prove very important & useful in the future.

dont worry about scaling bcoz it is very complicated, no one can predict which subject will scale YOU better... basic theory is, if u do good in any subject, u get scaled up, if u do poorly, u get scaled down. u dnt get FREE MARKS just becoz u r doing a harder subject!

as far the content goes, i think standard is way better coz we did the truman show starring jim carey which was great. institutions is also very interesting so im enjoyin it, whereas most of advanced hate their stuff...

speeches: yes we did one speech, and that was for journeys.

hope it helps!

The problem is that it's harder to get good marks in standard becuase there isn't anything very complex to write about. You're better off doing advanced.

Advanced involves a much more critical study of tests, and you have to study a Shakespeare play. I'm pretty sure that no matter where you are you will have to some type of speech, because part of the course requirements for both involve speaking.

I know everyone always says "standard scales the same as advanced, blah blah blah", but if you have the ability to do advanced, you should not be doing standard. If you are struggling in advanced, then it would be smart to drop down, but if you are doing well or okay, and know that you can do better if you put in more work in year 12, advanced will be much more beneficial.

If you get 90 in standard it may scale better than advanced, but only a handful of kids get a band 6 in standard each year. Not only do you have a greater chance of getting a band 6 in advanced, but you will have smarter people in your cohort - therefore when it comes to the alignment of marks, being in the advanced class will be more beneficial than if you are in the standard class.

And also, if you are planning on apply for any courses, scholarships catedships etc, that have other requirements for entry other than UAI (such as an interview), you will immediately be disadvantaged, because you will be competing with people doing advanced and most people assume that students who do advanced have a better english ability than those who do standard (which they normally tend to do).

our teacher told us that the difference between adv n standard is that they expect a higher quality of work then in standard. also that there is a different/extra section in the hsc.

yeh i was worried about doing standard coz i wanted to apply for scholarships/cadetships, but really, they cant judge by the subjects u do. most cadet recruiters have told me that its not about the subject u do, as long as u show effort n enthusiasm.

n my teacher said the same about expecting better quality from advanced students.
