Right, it seems this sector of BoS is kinda dead, so I've decided to save it.

Where do you go to get your Jap stuff? After all, since we all live in different corners of NSW (mostly Sydney) it may be worth running this kind of thread.

Here are mine:

Kinokuniya, Sydney CBD
Opposite The QVB, Woolworths Metro and Sydney Town Hall (city)
The ULTIMATE store for Japanese things in Australia. Really. You can NOT study Japanese without visiting.

Language Bookstore (Abbeys), Sydney CBD
Behind the QVB, on York street. Nice big "Abbey's" sign, second floor.
The alternative to Kinokuniya for when you're poor. The Language bookstore is targeted specifically at students and teachers, therefore keeping all the textbooks, prescribed books (namely Gotaifumanzoku) and dictionaries in stock. The reason I like them so much is that you can claim both the Government student subsidy (8%) as well as a varying instore discount - knocking back a respectable sum. They are also very approachable, and knowledgable about the BOS requirements.

As you exit Artarmon train station turn RIGHT and go down the ramp. You can't miss it.
This second hand bookstore (hence the name - "old books store") has a surprisingly good collection of dictionaries, all in reasonable to excellent condition. Also, they price books like they belonged to dead relatives who were hated, which is REALLY good for us pov students. I bought two dictionaries and Gotaifumanzoku there for less than $20 all up. Take a look some time, it's well worth browsing. It is also across the plaza from...

Ramen Genki, Artarmon
Same directions as above, can't miss this one either (much more famous though).
This is probably one of the best Japanese restaurants in Sydney (considering that their clientele is mostly Japanese...) and their setting is just as I remember from Japan. The food is delicious, the pricing is distinctly reasonable ($12 buys a HUGE bowl of food) and because it's across the way from Furuhonya, it counts as study! Ask your teachers about the place - if they are Japanese (or married to one) they'll know what I'm talking about.

Best Japanese restaurant I've seen in Syd so far.. went there on Saturday night with my Jap class and teacher.. it was a tad expensive but well worth it. The food was absolutely delicious

* note that finding any papers prior to about 1999 on this page is near impossible.. they don't have them for some reason

Ok, Lexicographer, I'LL answer your question. *rolls eyes at everyone who's replied so far.*

There are three main shops I go to. Kinokunia which you've mentioned.

I also go to CARTOON GALLERY which is on Pitt St in the Imperial Arcade. Top Top floor. You have to get passed lincraft. Warning though, quite expensive. Imperial arcade is roughly opposite Westfield on Pitt St. If you exit from the food courts, walk 45 degrees to your left. You should end up somewhere around Imperial arcade. Close to some women's shoe store that's Murasaki-ish. <- (very rough Japanese for a non-Japanese student! Hey, I'm trying to learn on my own here!)

err... Lesse. There's also:

* Kings Comics- Shop 14/277 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, NSW Australia

This is one of the comic shops I often go to. Elizabeth St runs parallel to George St. The station you want to get off is Townhall. (it's the closest.) From Cartoon Gallery, Imperial Plaza on the Pitt St exit, walk towards Townhall Station (which is underground) and you should be on a street with a monorail overhead (this is Elizabeth St.) From there just keep walking all the way in the same direction passed Townhall station - probably say 300-500 metres. I think there's about 3-5 traffic light crossings <sorry about the vague directions> ... and eventually you should get to Kings Comics.

I've only recently found out about this shop. I've walked passed it once and will have to visit it again to remember where it is so I have no directions, sorry.

I don't know where this is, (never been there) but if you're ever in Chatswood and you're bored, look out for Phantom Zone.

Hmm... we're not really supposed to start threads advertising goods and services... but since I started it, and it's all relevant, I just merged the threads.

A great source for tidbits on Japan

If you go to www.jlist.com and enter to the main site, scroll down a little and you will see an orange box where you can enter your email address. This will subscribe you to their mailling list, and every day or so you will receive an update from Jlist - these updates always have some very interesting facts about Japan in them

The guy who runs this site is a seriously knowledgable American who has lived and worked in Japan for a looooooong time as a teacher - so long that he's even married a japanese girl and started his family over there. As well as running the jlist business, he has his own website on Japan located here: www.peterpayne.net

If you go there you will be able to read about many different facets of Japanese life and various anecdotes that Peter wants to share with you.

they sell japanese music.

I just ask my mother to get it. Or she just gets me it without asking. I'm Japanese. She teaches/lectures Japanese at universities. I like Easy Street.

And...Kinokuniya RAWKS. ^^;;

jlist is a god send.. or it will be when i get my first pay ^_^

but i wish there were good places out west which sold jap books and anime. Kings comics used to be in penrith but alas are there no longer. There is a DVD place in Hornsby that is reasonable for anime dvd's tho.

mirc-x is good for downloading such things as well...

I can recommend a place in Maroubra/UNSW area. You can't buy anything, but it's kinda like a small library you pay (cheap) to go to. They have lots of Japanese books, magazines, DVDs, comics, anime and video games.
It's called 'C3 Comic & Drinks', I'll post up more details if anyone's interested..
