Clubs? Societies?

Are you even going to get an Access Card? (It's quite expensive...)

I'm joining the Anime Society, ChocSoc, SUITS and probably the VSA. And.... probably a bunch of random ones during O-Week.

Anything music-related. Eclectic singing group sounds fun.

What does it mean to be part of a society? Will I be invited to functions and stuff?

None of them seem that exciting. I really love history, but there doesnt appear to be anything like that. I also enjoy socialist theory, but I'm scared that the Socialist clubs will just be a bunch of SA members telling me why I should rally against the Murdoch press, and cut off my dick for Palestine. -.-

Basically clubs have events and other things along that nature which you can participate and what not.

If you find that there's a club which you feel is missing, you can grab a group of people together and make your own.

There is the gaius gracchus society for classics/ancient history. I think there's also a general history one but I can't be sure. Gaius gracchus has toga/themed parties, Greek/Latin reading groups, movie screenings (and tv shows) - what's on really depends on the committee for that year and how many members are actually involved (ie turn up to things after Oweek).

A lot of societies hold various bbqs, pub nights etc. depends on the society as to what they do/spend their money on.

I don't think they've released access card pricings for this year, however last year it was between $90-100 if I remember correctly. They had a lower price for returning members (around $90), and you can also purchase life of degree membership (3 or 5 years) which offer a saving pver buying a new one each year.

I don't know if it's continuing this year, but for the past two years the unions and the colleges teamed up so that college kids all got access cards (free/incorporated into fees). I did hear a rumour it wasnt happening this year though.

This. I wish there was some sort of left-wing group that wasn't attached to some sectarian nutter Trotskyist party like Socialist Alternative/Solidarity/Resistance but I think it's not to be!

In any case, I'll probably end up joining the Amnesty International soc, the Political Economy soc, the Atheist society, the tea society and not quite sure way else..! Definitely going to fork out for USU card though :p
