It depends I suppose. As u-borat said, the 31/310 is better as a percentile but there are extension classes where academic students tend to cluster. In the case of a high-scaling subject where academic students gather, the 5/28 sounds better. Because it seems to be 380 is for a compulsory course that would include all types of kids. (smartest to dumbest)

Not really. As Lyounamu said, it could be a compulsory subject and thus represents the entire cohort.

That would still be huge...like 2000+ people at one school if there's 6 grades?

err Yes really lol. The 28 person cohort might be the school's Maths EXT2 class or Latin Extension class so the ranking there would indeed be more awesome than the one in say... English, out of 310.

It still depends on the actual subject I must say. It may well be the... textiles cohort of 28 people...

You have the most epic scaling out...
4U maths- Best scaling out of 'normal' subjects.
4U English- Good scaling.
3U Latin- Amazing Scaling.
Physics- Good Scaling.
If you did well in all these subjects i.e band 6 you will get a UAI of 98+

You can just as easily get a 98 by doing subjects like :

business studies
economics
legal studies
general maths
advanced english

i was pretty close to 98 doing those subjects and i got a band 5 in english and 2 low band 6's.

1/28 and 1/380 is a better rank.. believe me..
i so believe you!

Is it better to be ranked 1 in one course and at the bottom 50 percentile for other courses or, to have all your course rankings around the 20-30th percentile?

Better to be ranked as high as possible in ALL your subjects
