Nicely said. Ive noticed how its really only USYD students critising other uni's, not just in this thread, but in the past- not a critisism- just an observation.
No1 is criticising other Unis! I don't go 2 Usyd but I know it is the most prestigous uni around!

Now Look at the topic of the thread, "Which uni do YOU think is the most prestigous" and lets end this argument now!

Collins English Dictionary meaning of "PRESTIGE"-
"high status or reputation achieved through SUCCESS, INFLUENCE, WEALTH. The power to INFLUENCE or IMPRESS; GLAMOUR!

Now which of the top Unis can u honestly say that possess all these mesmerising qualities, or even come close 2 all these qualities?...UWS?...Ur kidding me right?...CSU?...ummm no...UoW?...where the hell is that?...Usyd?...hell yeah!!! Not only is it Sydney's oldest and most successful uni, in it's history it has produced millions of top students in all facets of areas. It has glamour oozing out of it's historic architecture, it has an abundance of wealth guaranteed to serve future students well into the next millenium!

Now the general conception made by people who say Usyd aint the most prestigious Uni are the 1's who aint open-minded enough to admit that there own uni just aint the most prestigous and u feel the need 2 defend ur own Uni!

The End...

yea the main campus is on 325ha just west of Lake Macquarie, in the rural village of Cooranbong. it's pretty in the morning when no-one's around and the fog is lifting off the pastures, (there's a dairy farm nearby) and the sun is peeking through the dew-droplets in the gardens, (i did lots of photography on campus last year) i only consider three of the buildings to have particularly appealing architecture (college hall, built 1899 being the main one), the main buildings ain't that special. but on a spring arvo it's nice lying under the big purple jacaranda trees pretending to study :uhhuh:

yeah it is - i love living there! 'specially being a country gal. (okay maybe my lil' artsy imagination is romanticizing the place but it is nice, although the architecture doesn't begin to compare with Usyd or places like that), it's the landscaping i love, plus the main centre of the campus is pretty small, don't have to walk far.. and having a 1/2 olympic size pool, mulitpurpose sports centre and tennis courts within a stone's throw is the icing on the cake :)

According to the dictionary meaning, ANU would be more prestigious than USyd (It has more money, power, and success)

Thats good ... sounds so nice. Thats partly the reason why I chose to go to the Hawkesbury campus of every uni. I went there for open day and the isolation, fresh air and landscape just appealed to me. Sure, it might be an agricultural farm - but its so much better than the rat race in the city.

ahh but you are forgetting it is located in canberra,
therefore it has no power to influence, does not impress anyone, and has zero glamour.

So true, so true. While UNSW i think is ranked higher than Usyd, I think that because of the old campus, and history, and so called 'elitism'... Sydney is more prestegious.

And... yes... Canberra is a hole

But, I guess it depends on exactly WHAT you want to study at uni. Some unis are known to specialise in an area.....

UNSW= science (apparenty- i think engineering as well)
USYD= medicine, law
UTS= technology (just a tad obvious)
UWS= teaching, arts (i think)

I'm not sure about the other unis.

This whole prestige thing is starting to get really annoying and very very repetitive.

Personally, I feel that you cannot measure the prestige of a uni even with the actual meaning of prestige. We should be greatful that those fortunate enough to get into university are there studying the areas and subjects that they are interested in. We also shouldn't take the fact that we have made it into university for granted. University is extremely difficult to get into, and we really should spare a thought for those people who wanted to go to uni, but they didn't make it cause of their UAI or because uni is such a financial burden or whatever other reasons are.

It is completely unfair to base a uni's prestige based on how old it is, if is has sandstone buildings or whether it gets large amounts of funding. You personally cannot say that a university is prestigious until you have gone to every university and experienced them all.

I'm sure some of you (and I do hope that its the minority) that UWS has poor prestige. And I really don't care if you have these views, but what I don't appreciate is people badmouthing a uni which they have never attended. Its completely unfait for me to say which university is the most prestigious as I have only experienced UWS and attended at mac open day.
You all should be proud and honoured to be able to study at university, while at the same time, you must respect other people's disissions to attend different universities. After all, you should NOT be attending a specific university purely based on the "reputation status" that comes with it; you should be going to uni cause its the one that you feel suits you the most as well as it having the degree that you want.

Every university will have its strengths and weaknesses, and these should be viewed when choosing a uni / degree. However, I am in no position to say what the strengths and weaknesses are of every uni because I haven't experienced them. I can only speculate - which is what some of you are doing to universities that aren't made out of sandstone.

Attending a specific university does not guarantee you a job. After all, its the person that will acquire a job, not the prestige of the uni which the person attended.

Sorry about the rant :)

You UWS people really do feel strongly about this whole reputation thing don't you? :). I do agree with you though, in the sense that attending a specific university does not guarantee you a job, but rather.... it is the individual characteristics of a person that will acquire a job.

Id like to make a correctiont that USYD is renouned for its arts course due to the wide selection of units you can take.

Whoever it was that said something about UWS people are into this whole prestigious university thing, this is probably why:
People who do judge UWS and brand it a crap uni don't have relevent reasons to say what they do. I mean, having your own personal opinion is fine, but people fail to state WHY they think UWS is so beneath other unis.
It IS a young uni and is it really a crime that it hasn't had time to build up its rep? Its doesn't upset UWS students when other unis bag out the uni, but more because people DON'T have reasons to think the way they do. Can they say that the teaching is crap? No, because they haven't studied there. Can they say UWS campuses are shit? No, because they are for one, spacey and with the campuses combined, you'll get a huge-ass uni. Can they say people who go to UWS are acedemically challenged? No.
So, if you are going to judge UWS or any other 'non-prestigious' unis, think about WHY you think the way you do. Its not 'close-minded' to think that whatever uni you go to is excellent. I am proud to admit I go to UWS, but that isn't to say I don't think USyd is not prestigious. So whoever think that is close-minded or whatever, please clarify why.

Okay i think UWS is not a prestigious university, because i base prestigue on the impression of uni in question in the eyes of society. UWS widely does not have great social reputation, why i cannot say. But all i know is its not a widely regarded uni as others. I know this doesnt mean that it isnt a good uni. This is just a social rep question.

I will repeat im NOT saying its a shit uni. im just saying it doesnt have a great social rep.

you are right, although im just responding to questgions posed. this wasnt meant to be a uni bashing excercise. More just a discussion on which uni has the best prestigue.

Because of that, I'm sure violins are playing throughout Australia for you. :)

Though I will agree branding a particular uni as crap is silly. Every university in Australia sucks. ALL OF THEM. None of this USyd is better than UWS or ANU is better than UNE shit. They're all equally shit. Though, one could say the larger unis are worse than the smaller ones, since they have more people. More people means more fuckheads.

I reckon in name, ANU is most prestigious, since it's named after Australia. I do not think it's better, since I'm enlightened enough to know they're all shit. :)

And for fucks sake, stop your fucking crusades people.

haha...that person was me. Anyway, I don't know why UWS has a widely-known reputation for being a less-prestigious uni, but it does....otherwise this discussion wouldn't have been brought up thousands of times already.

However, If you find that the standard of teaching and employment prospects, etc...of UWS are good....then don't worry about what others think because their opinions are worth nothing since they haven't experienced UWS first-hand anyway.
