tsunami? pretty much, in the past decade, many med schools have been established (UWS, ANU, deakin et al) and many med schools have dramatically increased their intake in order to fulfill the doctor shortage. it was a very short sighted view by the government who thought that more med schools=more doctors which is only the case to an extent.

they are pumping out so many graduates now that its almost impossible for the system to offer them all training spots so what you will end up with is a bottle neck where hundreds of junior doctors have to join a long queue for training places into the various specialties. theres now even the problem where graduates have trouble finding internships (1st year out of uni). the problem will only get worse. there are a few states in particular where the problem is already emerging.
this is caused by naive asian and indian parents who force unwilling kids into medicine when other career paths like engineering are booming.

No... It doesn't matter how many people apply, universities set a specific quota on how many students they can take in.

not sure the problem is caused by that entirely

that is an ill-informed comment. as omni said unis have set quotas of how many students they must take. if these naive asians and indians didnt force their kids the number of graduates will not change and the problem would still exist.

It is surprising to me that Med graduates are having difficulty finding jobs (I don't necessarily disagree with it, it's just interesting to me, and something that I haven't heard before).

they changed the hsc chem and phys syllabuses so that some politician's children wouldn't fail as badly (as least that's what i've heard)

and they were to planning to water down the maths exams , which is a failure
but they even failed to deliver their failure

not at the moment (at least for us locals). but about 80% of international graduates miss out on internships after they graduate.

Hello OP,

Do not listen to whoever says which uni is more prestigious than the other.... All Australia medicine degrees are acreditated by the Australian Medical Board, so all the medicine degrees should be EQUAL. A medicine degree at UWS is equivalent to a medicine degree at UNSW.

BTW UNSW medicine accepts bonus points (cos it accepts the ACCESS scheme..... can someone confirm?....... I read this somewhere on the UNSW website ages ago).

Is you fail to enter medicine in the near future..... just complete ANY bachelors degree and then do the GAMSAT...... there'll be less competition (cos many people would've given up on medicine by then). Or you could sit the UMAT every year until u get in.

If u're truly into medicine.... y've gotta be prepared to sacrifice YOUR LIFE (i mean a few years of your life) for it.
unsw law accepts elite athletes and performers

there's nothing for med at most universities, i think uws might have some bonus points scheme applicable to med

This whole situation about graduates not being able to find internships makes me feel like I'm never going to become a doctor.

do you know where i can find stats on the number of people accepted into a med course in the uni, % of people complete the degree, % get into their desired speciality, % get internships etc.? i will check usyd, wollongong, unsw, uws and une websites, but any help will be much appreciated...

There is no bonus point for medicine at UWS - the only one I could think of is UQ which offers points for completing languages and etc.

UWS does however have a difference entrance requirement for GWS residents (such as myself), like slightly lower ATAR and UMAT threshold.

1. False. UNSW does not accept bonus points for Medicine, though I would believe under the ACESS scheme you would be placed in a higher preference to another student of similar credential.
2. Yes. I attended a Med lecture today and the speaker mentioned that it does consume a substantial part of your life, the youngest Surgeon comes out at 31 (under the assumption that he/she passes every exam on first attempt) and the pass rate for exams isn't that high.

Agreed, medicine is a BIG sacrifice. Completing your training takes at the minimum 10 years (much longer for a surgeon) and it requires a significant amount of energy, both physically, mentally and especially emotionally. Thats why doing medicine for money and/or prestige is, in my opinion, a very bad idea.

Regardless of distance travelled, which uni should I put higher on my preferences for med: UWS or Newcastle?

see my flow charts for pathways after medicine. in reality only about 1/10 graduates go on to become surgeons.
