I didn't do any of the typical 'good scaling' subjects.
I got over 90.

Don't choose subjects based on scaling.

Another site to look at: HSC Scaling | Dux College, HSC tuition specialists, HSC Articles

Basically you need to 'game' your HSC approach. I call this 'tactical' studying :)

As for the comments about scaling, I hate to break the news to you, but it is important to pick subjects that you are *CAPABLE* of getting good marks in, not just the ones that seem easy or you have an interest in.

ps: some background: I am a lecturer and academic advisor at the university of technology, sydney, for the IT courses. So playing the game is the best approach from what I have seen of the high achieving students. Since you are planning to get 99 , you have to play this game.

As for the advice not to worry about scaling, forget them, this is really poor advice.

One thing you will notice when you get to university, is that we don't scale class marks!!! Recall the purpose of the HSC/UAC ATAR mark - it is to determine if you are one of the "elite" who have the ability to do well at university. I think the HSC hasn't much to do with actual education or learning! :)

Thanks everyone ! Okay so currently lined up are,

-Advanced English
-Economics
-Business Studies
-Physics
-3U Math (going up to 4U later)
If i'm counting correctly thats 11U. and remember, its 12U minimum for prelim, so you are able to sort out 13U+ if you're undecided/can't choose 12U and just drop whatever as you're going through year 11 or year 12. The more the merrier :)

To the original writer who requested help:

Well...I guess if you like maths and currently doing well in it, I would recommend
Maths Extension l (3 units) in Year 11 and/or possibly Maths Extension ll (4 units) in Year 12.
Either way, they don't differ much in terms of the scaling ATAR.
Basically all Extensions courses scales well so if you want to, you could do English Extension as well but if you want to just do English Advanced, that's not too bad.
As for Economics and Business Studies in terms of the ATAR, I would pick Economics because Business Studies does scales you down though I am not so sure if Economics does scale up...
I'm quite sure it does.

Generally the harder subjects will scale relatively well.

Don't just pick the subjects just because of the 'scaling well' aspect, you also need to display certain interest in your subjects to do well in your subjects; even if you do poorly in your subjects, your ATAR for that subject will also drop...

I'm currently in Year 11 and my plan from beginning of Year 12 onwards is:

GET 100% IN EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...........

Good Luck!! ;)

thanks for everyone's input, thoughts and links to resources, this place is so helpful and ... just responsive !

i'm still going through all the tips and resources on scaling and subject selection, and all existing threads on that topic here. i understand everyone has their own opinion so i will try to understand each one before i make my own - and fill in my last subject and possibly change business studies.

if you're choosing your subjects based solely on scaling you're an idiot and probably won't get very far. do what you genuinely like and know you'll do good in; scaling is heaps overrated anyway. only thing to be a bit careful of is the amount of content in each syllabus; subjects like modern history, health, extension maths and economics are massive so if all your subjects were like that it could be a crappy year...
