  • the marijuana scaling...
  • i like romans. they remind us that for 2000 years the human race hasn't changed; it still as decadent, deceiving, avaricious and sycophantic as it has ever been.
  • saying something in latin just ups your kudos by 1000+ brownie points.
  • it helps your english; rukawa, pigs and myself all own advanced english.
  • chicks dig guys who know latin.

...oh wait, forget the last one. :D

Further reasons to learn Latin
Copied from 'The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Latin' by Natalie Harwood.
  • Latin is much easier than Japanese or Chinese. It has cultural and historical foundations which make it easier to transliterate into English.
  • Latin is dead? nay, just because it's not spoken doesn't mean you can't use it to do stuff. Latin is a 'fixed' language; that is why it is used in science, because, unlike English, it will not change.
  • People associate Latin with prestige. Think about it: school mottos, uni mottos etc.
  • It is true that Latin is an inflected (ie. endings change based on what a word is doing) language - so what? German is inflected, and Germans don't complain about it.
  • A lot of Roman culture is the basis of our society. Knowing more about Romans means knowing more about us as human beings.

Latin this year probably has less than 200 people studying the language so there aren't many out there to start with.

A few generalisations can be made about Latin students, as follows: They are either -
A. Very fond of the ancient Roman world; or
B. Someone who wants high marks and is willing to work like a mad person; or
C. Someone very smart; or
D. Someone highly disturbed (for studying a dead language - maybe you could go to the Vatican but otherwise a highly dead language).

I am a Latin student, so I think I'm entitled to make these assumptions.
That about answers why one does Latin.

I meant real activity... like people actually replyin' to threads and posts on a regular basis. Instead of once a month. :p

i forgot about the english thing

so serious reasons are marks, improve english skills, and the history associated with the language

yeah well if u enjoy it, that's all that's to it. i mean, it's not like anyone can understand all the maths we use, and it's not like we're gonna use it again so i suppose it's all the same
