there'd have to be a lot of people applying to a number of uni's though. for instance, a large number of newcastle applicants would also apply to unsw. this tends to make the applicant/place ratio look scarier than it actually is, because what you really need to be concerned about is the serious applicant/place ratio, which no one will ever know.
i think the only thing you can do with medicine is apply, give it your best shot and see how you go. although, it is still obvious that some people will have a better chance than others even before they apply.
