Can I file a tax return for 07-08 even though I didn't earn any money then (wasn't working)? The Daily telegraph (Sydney) today suggests that I can.

Why would you want to?
Because you can get up to $950 from the $42 billion Rudd Stimulus Package. One of the conditions includes filling out a Tax Return Form by the end of June.

The Daily Telegraph (Sunday) says:

"Q: I am an 18-year old in my first year of work abd have not put in a tax return yet. What about me?" "A: You can still get the bonus if you put in a 2007-08 tax return before June 30 thsi year."

yes, but that means you would have most likely been taxed in that financial year? Im pretty sure you'll actually have needed to be taxed to be eligible for the $950 (if its passed)

According to the ATO, if your taxable income (income less deductions) plus tax owed less any tax credits or offsets is >$0 then you are eligible.

So, if you earned $0 then your taxable income is $0, your tax owed would be $0 and you would have no credits or offsets making you ineligible for the $950.

Do you just need to be a taxpayer to receive the $950 dollars, or are there other conditions? I just thought the money was going to Centrelink recipients again so I've ignored the news.

idk, you can file a tax return at any age if you've paid tax, but maybe before 18 you have to get a parent to do it
idk i never had this problem

No I'm pretty sure you can still do it. When I did it when I was 15, it just said: age is under 18, check that its okay. Then just clicked ok, and it was fine
