I've noticed that on the Board's website that all the descriptions of Band 6/E4 say that a student must be able to exhibit extensive knowledge. Does that mean that you need knowledge beyond the syllabus to get a mark in the top Band? Are their going to be questions in the HSC which require you to have extensive knowledge in order to answer?

Thanks

It's all WITHIN syllabus - extensive knowledge within the syllabus..

You can answer a syllabus dot point with a few lines, or with a thorough, lengthy response. That is extensive knowledge, to possess detailed information regarding the syllabus, and not brief answers.

Maybe. Even when something beyond the syllabus is asked they will note it in the syllabus nonetheless.

In extension English you are required to know context of the text, historical background and where author grew up and how it affect the product....etc..... ...........thus "extensive knowledge". Not specified in the syllabus the particular information...but yeh, you get my point.

So do you know how to apply that concept to Maths and Science?

Math question 9&10 is where you would demonstrate this "extensiveness".
Science, still yes, but they would always specify the direction in the syllabus. Like researching about pros and cons of GM food.

The band descriptor is not really all that important anyway, it's just a matter of formalities. The syllabus will give you a better read.

Speaking of the Syllabus, my teacher was telling us that 2006 3u HSC had a question on Repeated Linear Factors for Partial Fractions, which is outside the Syllabus.
Not to worry anybody or anything but like, is that true? Doesn't that mean they CAN and DID test people on things outside Syllabus?

Lol you were right.. I found the question and it says:
Given that

Find a, b and c.

Now how on earth are you gonna know how to do that properly without knowing Repeated Linear Factors?
