Lentern, you really do overestimate the nations interest in politics.

He may be well liked by some, not liked by some, despised by others and the rest wont give a shit, but imho he'll never be immortalised as you say. This comment is more directed at politics in general rather than any party preference.
Immortalised is an elastic term. My point was the Rudd premiership will be rewritten as a glorious narrative about being an invincible politician because he was a strong, tough, compassionate, sensitive, level headed leader who was only toppled by a once in a lifetime politician in the opposite ranks who had a dream run and was in the right place at the right time.

fuck im going to hit lentern one day.
you see, there are some people who just dont see the real picture, and lentern is one of them
the bloke will die defending labor, i am yet to see such committed liberals around bos.
Oi bro! Look very carefully at whether I've said Rudd is a great prime minister and wonderful person in general or whether I think he will go down in history as one. I was not old enough to vote at the last election, at this stage I have no intention of voting for Kevin Rudd's ALP or Nathan Rees ALP. I would sooner vote for Malcolm Turnbull then Kevin Rudd and would very seriously contemplate voting for Costello. I have lauded Costello, Petro, Turnbull, Fraser, Gorton, Hockey and Joyce. I have defended Bjelke Petersen, Bishop, Nelson and Pyne. I frequently mock Gillard, Albanese, Latham, Mcclleland, Ferguson, Conroy and Swan. My personal liking for one government frontbencher does not translate into an insane, lopsided bias for the ALP.

Oh well if you insist, it is in the Costello memoirs, someone read them atleast, it's also in Howards bio, John Winston Howard but I suspect the same source in that wrote the Costello memoirs.

I'm glad to see someone said that about someone other than me here, even if it's pretty incorrect (I'd say incorrect of me also, but I'm biased).

I don't know how you can be so sure this is true. I know you say that's what people say about Howard (I don't particularly see it, but I won't argue that point) but people definitely don't say it of Keating or Fraser or Whitlam etc. I wouldn't be so sure that a guy, 15 months into his term, will be remembered so.

Either way, I'm just really sick of your saying it. I get the fucking picture, can you please stop saying the same shit over.

Rudd's prime-ministership wont be remembered with that fondness.

Whilst he may have certain political smarts, I have not once seen sincerity and complete comfort in any public or televised conferences he has made. Every time he speaks, I watch with intent to try and find something, but to no avail. The man's plastic fantastic!

Less colourful narratives, moar subtleness and humour plz. :)

And most Australians are very very dumb. Whatever his political skills John Howard did not have gravitas, he was not a commanding figure, he did not appear strong and just as history has somehow portrayed him as all those thigns it will portray Rudd as a bunch of other things he is not. The position maketh the man.

What the fuck would you know about the Australian people? What are you, just 18? Barely out of high school?
Youre a prick Lentern, with an entirely unwarranted superiority-complex. My political skillz tell me that you will be alone for some time

Ha!People have said exactly that about Keating. When his ship was sinking fast it was alot of "no matter what you think of what he stands for, you've gotta respect he really does believe in what he does, etc etc" Fraser I know less about but it's reasonable to think that the way the press and the Australian electorate thinks might have changed ever so slightly in twenty five years. AndI will stop when others stop talking bollocks about Kevin Rudd being a one termer who will get exposed as being all clever, tentative rhetoric with less substance than the cardboard cut out that stood in for him in that infamous parliamentary session.

I've seen the programs these numbskulls watch on TV, the radio programs the listen to, the way they drive, the way they speak, it reeksof a disgusting, disgraceful apathy from which breeds ignorance, meanwhile the intellectual cream of our crop jump through hoops to woo these people? They should not be forced to vote, heck it is one of the shortcomings of democracy that these people are allowed to vote. It's a two way street, I don't expect my lecturers to respect my assignments if I don't do the readings and these people should not expect me to respect the way they make political decissions if their understanding of the previous election was that Howard wanted to go for growth whilst Kevin wanted new leadership.

Woah! blast from the past, "thats why you've got no friends" what are you still doing your school certificate? I draw from the media, from experience, from polling and election results, it's not that they are just dumb, I cannot begrudge someone for pure lack of intellectual capability, it's that they don't try and better themselves, they don't try and become smarter, they're interested in securing a comfortable life and thats about it. I was ready to pull a shotgun if another person in my form last year said something to the effect of "do we need to know this for the exam?" And you press these people on it, you tell them things that they don't need to know to get by and they seem unable to understand why I think they should care that the Lords resistance army had just hacked 45 live people into little bits within a church. I've tried humble, it's not something I can do honestly.

I don't mean to belittle you Lentern, but you're still very young. Whilst you may not see it yet, once you get a few years life experience, you start to realise how very little you actually really know.

In regards to the Howard comment of him not having gravitas, I think it'd take some balls to stand up infront of a hall full of Indigenous australians back in 1994 and command the views of his government in the way he did. I certainly couldn't see Rudd doing that.

This wasn't him being diplomatic or playing smart politics, it was him telling it like he saw it. Of all the available evidence laid out over his term, you're calling Howard uncommanding and weak in beliefs?

On the other hand, Rudd/Labor rolled over within months of winning the election and apologised to the Indigenous, of which the benefits to Australia as a whole today I still fail to see.

You're only reinforcing my earlier comment on your intent here.

You really don't understand politics do you. Rudd will be immortalised by around half the nation in much the way Howard was, another twenty percent will respsect him even though they didn't really think too much of him and they will do so not because he was a great man or great governor but because he like Howard was a very skilled, clever politician.

Edit: Another contributing factor was that he was in the right place at the right time.
Do you really believe this?

I don't think Rudd will be immortalised at all, even by Labor. He is too cold to be loved, yet alone immortalised. To suggest that 70% of people will immortalise/respect Rudd is overstating it by around 40%.

You will disagree with me Lentern, but I think history will show Rudd as the greatest recipient of the perfect storm for opposition - voter antipathy for the incumbent government, a great PM who went past his use-by date, a very damaging PR war between Howard and the only man in politics possibly more smug than Rudd. Basically, Rudd won because he was sufficiently vanilla bland. He didn't look like a PM to make controversial decisions. A man for the times, if you will.

Except, those times changed with the GFC. We went from needing vanilla bland to a government - specifically, a treasurer - who knew what to do.

The multiple failures of the stimulus packages, the stolen generation apology, the internet censorship plan, global warming and now the attempt to reintroduce CSU are just too socialist/populist for the average voter imo.

Damn it, now he'll shoot straight into mentioning that it was clever politics to be "the modern day boring, dull, greying, jack of all trades, all things to all people politician is that which is most likely to climb the greasy poll in todays society"...

...and most probably be delivering it verbatim.
