what does 8th grade give you ?

A pretty certificate.

There are stories about how eighth grade allows you to teach - but they're not really accurate. You can begin teaching at any grade, although obviously the more experience you have the better you will teach.

omg - sorry i haven't read the rest of this thread but AMEB exams for me=worst memories of primary school. an hour at the piano everyday for like 7 years of my life - doing pieces i hated - and scraping away with Cs or Bs.

although i do admit it was good for me in some ways. you emerge from the horror of AMEBs to realise that other people think you are freak. and you learn other stuff quick. and you can show off with all your fancy scalework

im learning lmlus pieces atm tooo, although i dont know when im gna do it yet:

- bach p+f 2.18 in G#min
- beethoven tempest sonata
- chopin winterwind etude
- debussy jardins sous la pluie

I passed AmusA last year with distinction. I must've been pretty lucky though because I thought I was just a tad off-beat in the Presto section.

We have done a lot of vocal work, not too worried there, but need to improve my technical skills. Has anyone taken 4th grade singing here and can tell me more about it? Also, what is the point of taking this exam? In which way does it help?

I did my 8th grade singing exam last year and passed with honours so i think i mught be able to give u a few pointers! 1st of all... good on you for doing this exam! its tough, but i think i prefered practicing for voice about 100x more than i liked piano or flute...
The 4th grade is generally quite a big step up from 1, 2 and 3, as it is the first of your intermediate exams. The singing exams not only make a nice big impression on your CV, but they are vital to improving technique and losing bad habits, so that generally you are a better singer (and better pitcher) for the rest of your life. The point of doing classical pieces are that these pieces are specifically chosen to show off the different aspects of a persons voice (e.g the high lyric notes of a soprano or the gravelly low notes of a bass etc). they need quite a bit of practise to nail them, but when you do, its such a huge achievment that examiners generally lavish the praise on your report (another one for your CV)...
other than that, you probably already know how many songs you have to sing, i cant quite remember how many for 4th but i know that they generally only ask you to sing one of your extra pieces, and if you've been doing really well they might only ask for a bit of it
finally, even if you cant summon up the energy to practise every day, make sure that you try and do your exercises once a day, as you have to know these off by heart and the major/minor shifts can be a bit tricky...
oh and you also have to do aural (clapping, singing the tunme etc) and a nice bit of sight singing! get your teacher to work on this really early cos its like 20% of your mark!
the examiner also asks you general knowledge q's about your pieces but they arent too hard in 4th grade

Don't stress too much about it. Keep in mind that it's only one person's opinion. Read their comments and work it over with your teacher. The reason why the examiner gave you a D was because they thought you weren't ready to start A.Mus.A and that's perfectly fine.

Read over their comments and try to improve on them. Also, don't just rely on your piano teacher to do all the work. Ask other people (music teacher at school, or a friend who has done higher grades) and see their perspectives on your technique, style and performance vibes. Work over it and aim for a distinction (A+) in A.Mus.A

Nope, I got a "D". The examiner was a dick, but the grade stood. Didn't stop me though, I just went on to try for my AMusA. Of course, the fact that I attempted That after starting the HSC course was probably to my detriment, but hey, it happens.

After I finish the BABMusStudies, I'll probably try for the AMusA again, just so I can say I have it.

I screwed it up! damnit.. I think I practised too much. I shuda had a break.. And the room was cold so my hands couldn't do vibrato properly and violin kept going out of tune.. Anyway I got C+

awww that always happens to me.
i practice like 4hrs a for a week or so
and my finger get to rigid
and stiff and not fluid and everything just runs outta wak
and i also get heaps tense and my bladder and stomach goes crazy

which makes up for the fact that i've only ever gotten b's

first you need to go find the viola amus syllabus and choose songs from there.
there are no scales, exercises or aural, but intense general knowledge.
to pass, you need to be a very confident performer, understanding all the different styles of music and how to play them in that style.

there is no written part in the exam as such, but you must have passed 5th grade musicianship/theory.

you only need either mship or theory, not both.
mship has an aural component, more history, but the harmony is more theory 4th level.
theory has no aural component, not so much history, but harder harmony.

it used to be you had to get a credit, but i think its been changed to just pass now.
