I wish it worked like that at our store where someone was actually rostered on for self serve and they stayed there for the whole shift. It all depends on the service and store managers. Eg. I'm expected to serve smokes unless it's really busy. And if expess is busy and my store manager is walking past he would want me in express, even though I don't agree with it.
The actual rules are:
1. Attendant never leaves the area and should not be expected to perform other jobs. It's a security risk.
2. The money sections shouldn't be opened during trade unless a fault occurs. We are supposedly meant to let the store services specialist know before opening it! I doubt anyone does that. And then have the store manager present while fixing it.
When it is quiet at night I think it's fine for the attendant to be filling smokes while no one is actually using self serve.
I'm suprised you got self serve before a refurb. Once you get it the service desk is most likely going to be next to self serve.
