Why does Tasmania always have to be different to the rest of the country? It seems like that if the mainland has it one way, you guys have to do something completely different which screws up people when they're on holidays lol

One of the ladies today had a customer from hell who couldn't accept the fact that cigarettes can't be refunded or exchanged once opened. She told me later she was "this close to slapping her".

I'm so glad I don't do the cigarette counter, people can be agro when they haven't had their fix.

Just got back from a week at the Store Support Centre with the rest of the grads. I can't reveal too much details, but I was extremely impressed with Coles upper management (we had lectures from the MD (Ian McLeod), CFO, and marketing, HR, stores, operations, retail ops managing directors amongst others) and their attempts to differentiate from Woolworths. If you work in a renewal store you will understand some of the new customer service concepts - they are really, really good and something Woolworths, with is only interested in the bottom line, wouldn't dream of implementing. Woolworths won't know what hit them in two years in my opinion. I am excited to be joining Coles at a really important transitional time in the company.

Well I know at one of the new concept stores out my way they apparently have noodles cooked fresh to order in the delicatessan. (I'm not sure how else it differentiates from Woolies/Safeyway as I haven't been there myself).
It will be very very interesting to see what the pick up for that is like, and whether similar sorta things are spread across the store.

From what ive seen Coles and safeway/woolies pretty much offer the same services, workers are pretty much trained the same and have the same procedures in the way they work, they have similar policies and management structures.

But yeah, whatever they bring out will probably mean more work for us.

I'd agree with that.... apart from the blatantly obvious fact that Woolworths is just better ;)
Haha kidding :p they're all shit.

Yeah pretty much if they follow the same sort of direction as the concept store in (Smithfield?), they're going to end up having to get a whole lot more specialised staff who're only good for one thing, and the rest of the store will suffer or wages will be blown right out of the water.

I wonder how easy it would be if a person who worked at coles wanted to change jobs over to safeway, or vice versa.

I would think that specialty staff (i.e. fishmonger, cheese expert) positions would probably only exist in the upper-class / high sales $ stores. I'm really interested to see how the renewal progresses through the smaller stores.

Have you heard anything back about your Deli 2IC position yet?

One of the ladies who used to work in my store before she moved to QLD left for a job at a Woolworths closer to where she lived but ended up coming back to coles after a few weeks.

Well whatashotbyseve's just done it. I'm trying to do it :p
Genuinely not out of any preference as far as company goes, I just need to hurry up and get a move on and find a non-shitkicker position permanent (whereas currently I'm in a relief role)
