You're not breaking the law by starting the HSC course bit earlier. Aslong as your school has finished the prelim course then there's no problem.
I'm not saying the student is breaking the law.... it's the teacher that's not suppose to teach it....... even if you did finish the prelim course.

But again, since for maths there are no clear boundary between prelim and year 12 (unless about 4u), they can't really catch you for it.

Anyone have a pdf copy for a 4u textbook? I just want to have a look at it

I'll pm my email and you can send it through msn... or you could just give me a download link :p
iirc Khorne made a scanned copy, I had/have it somewhere, but only half the book, he never finished it or did finish it and never sent me the other half

lolwhut. Scanned a copy?
Don't textbooks usually come with a CD?
Spiralflex was nice enough to send me a 4u cambridge textbook.

~It's not interesting at all. Gawd.

I thought there was no such thing as a prelim or HSC course for maths, because you need both for HSC

Yes, but you can't learn applications of calculus to the real world before calculus itself. So what textbook people do is they split up the topics in a logical-ish manner to teach in Year 11 and Year 12.

James Ruse never fails to break that law. Haha.

Those kids don't need the school to start the 4U course... Most of them get private tutors who probably started 4U in prelim ..

umm no there's no law against it

oh, so that's what people mean.

tbh, looking at the textbook, I don't think it's the right course for me. But i've already enlisted my name so i'll still give it a go. I'm just scared i'm going to epically fail.

I could imagine 4unit maths to be pretty gay if you follow the schools schedule (i.e. learn 2unit,3unit and 4unit at the same time). I can't imagine how you can still have time for your other subjects without studying over 3hrs a day

We're gonna learn 2/3u during normal classes and then 4u during lunch and after school and stuff. tbh, I never do my math homework and devote no time to studying for it unless I have an upcoming exam, where i'll spend at most 2 hours studying.

You should do your maths homework. Maths is an applied subject and hence you have to practice most days.

If you understand the concept, you can answer any question that relies on that concept [IMO] it just takes time
Though you should complete questions to build up confidence, speed, thinking techniques, etc
Hmm... I have no idea how you all do your homework. It's so boring... and i'm so... unmotivated.

I never thought i'd say this... but I am going to give it a go, despite being really, really bad at maths. My maffs teacher said we start 4u next term.

Anyone else doing it? Tbh, I only wanna do 4u for complex numberz, then i'll probably drop unless it's interesting.
IMO, complex numbers isn't as interesting as say... CONICS, or... INTEGRATION.

Understanding a concept and applying it are two different things. It's one thing to actually get the theory but it's another thing to know how draw upon that understanding and using it to solve unfamiliar problems. You could understand all the theory in Maths Ext2 but that's not enough to get a band E4 because this course has a huge emphasis on applications of your understanding to solve problems you've never seen before. This is what ultimately makes this course so challenging because once people actually see the solution to a problem they might be able to perfectly understand the logic behind it but if they were asked that question in an exam prior to seeing that solution, then they would experience difficulty in determining how to solve it (I'm sure current or former students know exactly what I mean).

When I start 4u next term, I'm going to do my 4u homework. I think I get what you guys mean now.
~Must not be lazy.

My summary of this thread: Through doing homework and stuff, you have more exposure to questions and will probably know how to answer it, comparing to someone who only knows conceptz but not how to apply it.
