yes we use fitzpatrick 2u for year 10 but we do not cover all of the topic as for 4u we officially start at the beginning of term 4

I would have imagined they would start Calculus during the late stages of Year 10. I guess I must have been wrong. Do you have their Year 11 schedule?

Wtf @ linear programming lol didn't think this would ever be taught in high school (let alone Year 9). Interestingly, Circle Geometry and Polynomials are typically taught in Year 10 though for some reason they are in the Year 9 schedule. Other than these, the topic list looks pretty typical of any other selective school...

what is linear programming?
Linear Programming has nothing to do with computer programming.

It refers to an optimisation technique - finding the maximum or minimum of what is called linear objective function subject to a set of linear inequalities - referred to as linear constraints. [you have already come across linear constraints in yr 9?? maths in the form of regions defined by say: 3y+2x-7 > 0 AND y-3x+6 > 0; in practical LP problems, e.g. in oil refining, several dozen linear inequalities involving more than half a dozen variables may well be involved]

George Dantzig invented the Simplex Method for solving Linear Programming problems.

Why I'm mentioning Dantzig is that he was already a legend as a postgraduate student. Arriving late for class as a graduate student in University of California, Berkeley (in 1939) he copied down 2 problems written up on the board by his teacher, the eminent Prof Jerzy Neyman thinking they were his class assignment. He thought the questions were a little harder than usual and handed in his completed solutions a few days later still thinking they were an assignment that was overdue.

"Six weeks later he received a visit from excited Prof Neyman" who was anxious to tell him he has just solved two of the famous unsolved problems in Mathematical Statistics !!! I think he was asked to write these up for his PhD thesis. (graduate students often struggle for a couple of years at least to come up with work good enough to be accepted for a maths PhD)

Still doing pretty well, came =3rd in last assessment.

EDIT: To the James Ruse thingy.
I did polynomials and Circle geometry in year 9 too as part of out extension programme, but we barely touched polynomials and didn't go near circle geometry in year 10.

I did polynomials and Circle geometry in year 9 too as part of out extension programme, but we barely touched polynomials and didn't go near circle geometry in year 10.
I was in the advance year 10 class, and we did a whole unit on circle geometry

Oh, that's good then :)
I was in the advance year 10 class, and we did a whole unit on circle geometry
We were going to do circle geometry, but we were lazy and begged our teacher to just let us bludge and "prepare" for school certificate, so in the end we didn't do it :D
We did polynomials though. That was fun.

I don't know if it's worth picking based on how much time it takes, and the fact I am only averaging 80% in maths ext 1 :/

About James Ruse, I was told by a graduate that they started 4u in term 3, year 11.

I don't know if it's worth picking based on how much time it takes, and the fact I am only averaging 80% in maths ext 1 :/
IMO it doesn't take as much time as a lot of people make it out to be. You just have to make sure you do your homework, and possibly a bit extra depending on how much you need to.

4u is a great course, you just need to spend time on it, how much time depends on your natural ability. But if you are prepared to apply consistent effort, you should find 4u manageable and rewarding.
This is EXACTLY my view! 4 unit math undoubtedly takes alot of commitment and hard work, but even for the amount put in, it is highly rewarding and the massive scaling is a always a boost-factor.

This is EXACTLY my view! 4 unit math undoubtedly takes alot of commitment and hard work, but even for the amount put in, it is highly rewarding and the massive scaling is a always a boost-factor.
it doesn't take hard work and commitment, you should treat it as you would any other subject
