i wanna be a neurosurgeon because

1. I'm very interested in the brain as an organ.
2. I've always been an idealist who sees health i.e. life as the fundamental human right.
3. Point 2. was augmented by the fact I lost several close friends at a young age so doctors always appeared like heroes to me.

good on you. but you will soon realise that you're interests change a lot when you actually get into medicine. i started off like you, thinking i was going to be a surgeon and all. but after working in hospitals for the past 3 years, i've completely changed and find that i enjoy interacting with patients a lot more and prefer internal medicine to surgery.

Is there any reason why? Do people often change? I've heard there is an enormous amount of stress for a neurosurgeon....however I'm willing to give it a go, especially since there appears to be a shortage of people willing to pursue it as a career (due to the stress etc.).

neurosurgery is the most complex part of medicine.

At the moment, you're not dealing with it from an informed opinion. You're a 16-18 year old kid (not an insult, I am too) trying to decide what to study for the next 15 years basically. You're bound to change in some way shape or form in the next decade (or longer, in your case).

Yeah, I suppose you only gain a true understanding of something once you've experienced it first hand. Right now I'm pretty determined to be a neurosurgeon, but I'm keeping my options open for the future.

well because you dont have any clincial experience yet. once you see what its all about, you will change. there definitely isnt a shortage for neurosurgery lol. it is probably the number 1 most competitive field out of all of medicine to get into (see below)

neurosurgery is the most complex part of medicine.

neurology is generally the most complex field in medicine to understand for both medical students and junior doctors. also, there arent many neurosurgical training spots. i think they have about 9 in total a year across australia and the youngest person to get in last year was 35. so by the time you are fully specialised u would be about 40yrs old. thats half of your life gone, dedicated to sitting surgical exams (these are tougher than anything you've done in your life, trust me) and resume buffing (getting a PhD and doing medical teaching etc).

I got 91st percentile (overall score 62), but my individual scores were... well:
Section 1: 69
Section 2: 39 (I KNOW! FML)
Section 3: 77

I can't get to UWS because of their 1:1:0.5 thing (mine adds up to 147, which doesnt meet their 152 requirement).

My ATAR is looking at around 98-99. Do you guys reckon I'll have any chance at UNSW med? And what about UNSW optom?

why does optometry require UMAT anyway, I don't know much about it but isn't optom just the study regarding eye/structure/--- ultimately becoming an optometrist who just fits ppls glasses and does eye checks, not like they're even an opthalmologist. Optometrist doesn't even require that much "empathy" and "compassion" and ability to react to unexpected situations and think on your feet, does it?

The interview is designed to seperate those who are passionate from those who want money+prestige. But even the interview can be ineffective in that capacity.

High UMAT comes from all the money people pay on practice and shit for prestige.
Fuck off UMAT and base everything off ATAR and interviews. :/

^ 100% true, the guy in our grade who got 98th percentile has about the empathetic capability of a teaspoon but aced all the sections, he even said he doesn't care about med he just wants the money.
