comm law at one of UNSW, USYD, Melbourne or ANU or other top uni in Australia as well as reasonable WAM or GPA. It has been stated many times that you need at least Distinction WAM i.e. 75. However, a lot of people have that...like A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE THAT. If you want to distinguish yourself, having Comm law would help as well as some work experience + higher mark (around 80-85 at least)

Two extremely different fields. There may be occasions where the work overlaps (for example, I am doing due diligence work for my clients because the IBers need something for their due diligence defence), but for the most part, they are very different.

IBers would work when there are transactions going on. This can vary but my friends at DB, Mac and UBS have all consistently pulled 80+ a week and typically don't get public holidays off. In my limited experience actually dealing with IBers, it's not uncommon for me to respond to an email at midnight and get a response pretty quickly.

Very often you are expected to drop in on Sundays but not the full day. Just to wrap up on some unfinished or urgent business.

In terms of hours, 80+ hours sounds about right. Depends on time of the year and if there are live deals going on. You can pull nights of all nighters or 4am if there's a big deal going through.

Yeah you ll work from home, but thats about it. You cant have a week where you decide to fuck off to fiji or something and not do any work.

I struggle to think of any profession which you can just take a week off for no reason. We're not talking about taking annual leave of course.

A lot of professions/firms aren't going to allow you to take annual leave during busy seasons. Put it into context. If you're apart of a deal worth millions of dollars (or more) you can't just decide you've had enough and you're due for a holiday at any given point.

Personally I think the work of an IBer is fascinating but there's no way I could cope with 80+ hour weeks as the norm.

I think that's quite fair and expected as part of your professionalism and dedication to your work and firm. This applies everywhere, not just in professional services.

Re: Do investment bankers still work on Sundays?

In IB you can say you want to take 2 weeks off (any part of the year) because then the bank will lose its clients. At best you could do is go on a holiday for a week max, but still be working out. You cant have a week where you decide not to take any calls/do trading etc.

OP: IBers are know for their lack of morals.

IB's pays great but everything else about it is a shithouse.

Might be worth adding that I don't think anyone in this thread has actually worked in IB.

Re: Investment banker vs Accountant

I was about to post the exact same thing.

I don't know much on the topic other than what I've posted above (that being restricted in taking annual leave at certain times is not as unreasonable as it's being made out to be).

Take everything with a grain (lump of) salt and make your own enquiries to be certain.

Re: Investment banker vs Accountant

No offence but if you need a comparison between accountant and investment banker your probably not fit for either of them. People who go down those career paths want it 100% and dedicate their lives to it. If they have to choose between "god" and work they choose work. If they have to work 120 hours a week and never see their family they do. Although many investment bankers are Jewish excluding them from working an Saturdays I would guess.
