yeah we have huge shortages though and racism keeps a lot of them out
we had a few apply for my bosses job and they were pretty highly qualified too
none got an offer

I am working towards my pilots license and I can pretty much fly a single engine cessna better than I can drive around Sydney city.

my job cant be sent offshore so the correct analogy would be how would i like it if my boss was able to give my job to an indian/asian migrant for minimum wage

and the answer is i would be in a different career path if he could, but engineering is in extreme demand so he has to pay us all well to attract decent employees

yes it requires a physical presence

in a perfect(the future) world i could potentially be sent offshore. further integration of survey systems, gps, satellite imaging and CAD/design programs could mean that all engineering decisions could be made remotely, but we are a long way off yet
